Can a .com be suspended over copyright issues

So... I've been seeing a lot of talk about domain name suspensions, but nothing clear: CAN a domain name be suspended for copyright issues with the content in it?

If it can - why doesn't that happen often (I've seen many cases of hosting suspensions, it's much easier to kill the domain - while a person can place the content on a new domain, it won't rank as well, will take much more time to build, and sometimes it's a very active site they'll be killing - if they remove the host, a new host provider will be used and it's a rinse and repeat process) - any information from people who know what they're saying for a fact and not just speculating would be appreciated

Also, assuming it's possible - any easy solutions for preventing that from happening with a .com?

It's really up to the domain provider.
Some providers will contact you about it and that's it, none of their business.
Others will just suspend your domain.

Exactly the same with hosting.

hmm... so I wonder why it usually happens with hosting providers (happened to me a few times) and not domain name companies? Also, know any domain name company that is easy to work with, and a .com can be transferred to them for peace of mind from such complaints (I checked with an attorney btw, our use of the supposed copyrighted content is not illegal in any way... but hosting companies don't really care, they take you down when there's a slightest doubt )

Know by personal experience that GoDaddy doesn't give a damn, even if they receive a C&D for your domain.

The best thing you can do is to switch to some solid German hosting. Hetzner, for example, just forwards all complaints to the customer, but they don't provide simple hosting solutions, they focus more on raw servers.

.com's are under USA jurisdiction, they can be seized by the FBI very easily. Other domains it's a pain. It's why a lot of illegal sites are using different domain extentions.

Yeah domains can be banned and seized if the domain breaches © infringement.

As other have said, it can happen, take a look at bodog.com for example.
Not only for .com, but for all public extensions because they are administered by ICANN that is under US jurisdiction.
The domain for kickass torrents kickass.to was recently seized event though the .to extension is from a pacific island named Tonga.

So there is no way around except maybe for private extensions like .bit, but there is no device sold that supports it out of the box, so that has to be done manually and very few peolple know how to do it.

Your best bet is with an extension not under ICANN that is through a registrar that is offshore.

I have not seen much domains getting banned. I know many BIG BIGG websites which hold too much copyrighted content but still they are not banned even after many years.

I have worked with very many domains but I will say never has my domain name been suspended. I will say that the only way that you can be suspended is when you have been reported to the authority. When people raise complains about the domain and the content, then you are likely to be pulled down. Otherwise on the copyright I have not seen any case to date.

In most cases when some violates the copyright, the owner just reports to the web hosting provider to remove that content. But sometimes whole websites got seized just like kickasstorrents when authorities get involved in this.

You need to register domain in offshore registrar.
