My Journey to $500/Day Using Shopify.

Dude, that's amazing! How much did you spent on ads, it must have been quite a significant amount considering the amount of traffic on your site?! Or do i get something wrong?

Also, could you please explain a little bit more about choosing a good product to promote? It would be nice if you could give us a quick example of your thought process when it comes to choosing an aliexpress product that actually sell to the Instagram audience. Perhaps you could also explain how you choose the right pricing for you products.

I appreciate all the help & wish you a lot more success!

Have a nice day :)

Great journey and amazing progress. I'm sure u will set pretty high standards with the kind of progress you've had.

Thanks a lot for your tips and guidance you provided me. Highly appreciate you taking out time from your busy schedule to answer my silly questions. :)

Awesome guy, awesome journey thread :D

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm no different than anyone of you on here trying to better your lives by making some side money and hoping it turns into some big cash.

In regards to niche questions etc. don't worry about what me or the next guy is doing. STOP thinking that way! You're only screwing up your own progress I promise you! Stick to what you know. Just as was said in Dale Carnegie's book 'How to Win Friends & Influence People': "every man is my master in some way, in that I learn of him." Meaning that you could pass a homeless man on the street and even though he's homeless, I can guarantee you that he has at least one skill he knows that he is MUCH better at than you or I. So would the homeless guy be better copying me or another successful person w/ what we're good at? Or would he be more successful at using the skills he knows and is good at? Bingo! Everyone in here has some sort vast knowledge about something. Maybe it's cooking, marine life, sandals, carpentry. I don't know...but just quit trying to chase the easy $ you read about here. You'll go crazy! Pick your niche based on what you know and are already pretty knowledgable and understanding of. I promise you will be so much more successful if you do that! You need to do that. And fail. And tweak and test then fail again to get it right. That's what will separate you from being successful with your journey or failing. I know it sucks to hear but it's the truth. Least ways you won't get bored with your journey Bc it's something you know well.

Now - in regards to what I'm spending in ads, yes...NOW I'm spending a lot more. But when I first started I was spending $20/day and VERY nervous at that! Whatever you set your ad budget at, let the ad budget run for at least 2 weeks so you can have some hard data to use to correct your website. Ask friends to look at your website and tell you what they think is wrong. Fix your funnels. I'm now spending anywhere from about $500 - $600 per day in ads.

ei bro your journey is inspiring... im doing the same shopify + IG on my own niche... but im new to instagram ADS... soo what would you say it works best for a campaing? conversions to website(cpm) or clicks to website (cpc)?

Very interesting jouney dear OP, can I get your skype? Want to discuss smt with you!

I feel inspired by your journey. I want to say Thank You.

But of an update for you guys. So with the dropshipping to me 1st then shipping to customers method I've used I have run into the sort of problems you might expect along the way. I've found that for me, my problem started to shift from (how do I get profits in?) to (how do I efficiently run the backend side of the business?). I got slammed by fraudulent chargebacks. Literally. To the tune of nearly $7K in one week alone! That s*** hurt. Thankfully there were only 1-2 orders that had actually been shipped out that I took a loss on the order + the products + the shipping fee + Shopify's $15 chargeback fee. Quite the load of bull*** right? I see you guys in here working so hard to build your stores and marketing, just to have it threatened by scamming a**holes! Really made me furious early on in April - May. So I'm going to lay out some tips for you guys to learn from and PLEASE BE AWARE OF THESE TIPS! If your business jumps in revenue this can very well happen to you as well. I'm on my 3rd merchant processor currently.

These Are The Tips NO ONE Tells You Once Your Website Finally Takes Off:

-SAVE THAT MONEY!
It's cool once you start making fast cash daily and almost alluring because you begin to feel like 's***, this money will never stop coming in because it's so easy to make!' Remember where you started! The money can and WILL stop for a variety of reasons. Our jobs as online marketers is to mitigate the bleeding and fix the problem as quickly as possible while learning from the mistake. I damn near received a death blow from my merchant processors withholding all of my money that I was generating for nearly 20 days. I was still getting lots of sales daily but now the only problem was that I was getting more and more lower on my cash. Almost to the point where I couldn't even pay for the items to be shipped to customers because my funds were being withheld. Essentially my business was being slowly strangled. Which brings me to my 2nd tip.

-DO NOT RELY ON ONLY ONE MERCHANT PROCESSOR!!!!
I was using Stripe because Shopify provides it pretty seamlessly, but once my chargeback ratio went above 1%, I was deemed a risk and all of my money was scheduled to be withheld. Most don't know this but if you get more than 1 chargeback per 100 orders processed, then you are deemed a risk. Once that number inches higher, your account will be suspended and all your hard earned money will not be released to you. To get the money back you will have to submit around 10 orders to show that you have fulfilled them successfully with tracking numbers etc. I think PayPal makes you submit 15. The random orders that they choose from are also orders that are up to 1 wk old. Meaning that if you're waiting in merchandise to arrive in USA you could be waiting a long time to submit the proper docs on those orders. I would recommend having 2-3 merchant processors. Some will give you a certain limit on how much you can process like $35K. So if you process transactions for $50K one month because you had a great month, then that will not be good. Having multiple processors enables you to spread the risk. I used PayPal but they had limited my account and are actually pretty s****y about working on the sides of businesses! I feel like they almost encourage their customers to file chargebacks.

-DON'T TRUST SHOPIFYS RISK ANALYSIS! So many times it's been absolutely wrong and I paid the price. It's not a bad tool to just view some important info like if the billing info is correct, but don't make it your sole tool to check for fraud. Tryout SiftScience, it's aggregates a SiftScore based on tons of data points to determine if the user appears high risk or low risk. They give a score of 1-100 and I'd say anything over the score of 40 I do a double check on. If it's still looking shady then I'll submit it to Riskified for a Chargeback guarantee.

-DIVERSIFY YOUR AD/MARKETING STRATEGY
I started off only messing with Instagram. Then I slowly but reluctantly got a Facebook page. I ran ads on my IG account and then ads on my FB account. The FB ads started to get more people and cheaper CPC than IG. I then started using Pinterest at the urging of another board member on this site and I was very reluctant too! But I did it, set my boards up, and have ads running now and have somewhat figured out what to do and am also driving traffic to my main site. I use Wanelo as well which has an easy plugin from Shopify and get me at least 1 new random sale every 1-2 days.

HAVE A CLEAR RETURN POLICY
Make sure your policy is on the website so customers can read it but also so you can refer to it. It's aggravating getting returns but it's part of the game.

That's really it for my tips and advice. Hope you guys don't have to invite anything like this but if you do. Omg it's a total bi*** no doubt!

I'm about to start a new push for ad sales here very soon so I can climb back up to the $55k-$65K sales months I was having. It's all doable. Just need to be smart getting there this time. As you all know $100k/mo. is the number I'm still aiming for and not stopping till I hit it. Becareful out there if your business is growing. Always going to be someone who wants to take it all away.

would it not have been wise to cash out some of the balance in your payment providers? or was that not possible?

Couldn't. It was all being withheld by a****** in Risk dept. So even though I was doing $1k - $3k per day in sales, I wasn't seeing a dime. It was all being withheld and not deposited. Meanwhile those orders that were coming in, they needed to be ordered/shipped etc. So I could just not order/ship and wait for my funds to finally get released and back to normal and then get a mountain of pissed off customers and even more chargebacks. Or I could use my money I have to just bite the bullet and front every expense until my money was released to me. Keep in mind that I was also spending $500-$1000/day in ads and while that money was generating sales, I wasn't seeing a dime. So I was out tons of money daily. Absolute nightmare.

Hopefully if others here do reach this point that they can be aware of all this. The backend of processing, chargebacks, fraud prevention, customer service gets really really screwy and people seemingly don't ever bring these issues to light.

Many of the journeys on here are hot air, a lot of the times serving the poster as a pre-sale, so there's no surprise that the "real" issues are not highlighted.

I wonder if a direct processing system with a credit card machine etc resolves some of the issues

Anyway, a good insight into the backend. It's shocking how a processor can simply hold back people's hard earned cash and get away with it, Simple and outright treachery!

Yea it's seriously insane how much fraud everyone just somewhat allows online with no ramifications. It's as if no one really cares and everyone just wants to pass the buck on to the business owners. Banks want their customers happy and will allow 2 friendly fraud claims per year for each customer (most don't know this). Meaning that you can place an order from a website, receive the item, call your bank and file a chargeback and even though they have docs stating your item was purchased and delivered (sometimes even signed for) the bank will still side with their customer.

I will say that there is a group in California called Verifi that have a propietary software system that stops chargebacks before they reach your merchant processor. It's called a Chargeback Dispute Resolution Network and you can issue a refund to the order (whether you shipped or not) and this way the issue is handled directly with the bank before the chargeback + the chargeback fee is ever sent to your merchant processor. It sucks having to issue a refund for a scammer that has received their item but sucks even more if you get chargeback fee + chargeback count against your record. Once you are flagged by your merchant processors 'Risk Dept' it's a total b**** getting out of risk. So many docs you have to submit to them before they will release your funds again.

***UPDATE***

Figured I'd give an update since I may not have. Things are still moving with my journey but I've definitely ran into a 'more money more problems' scenario as mentioned with a couple prior posts.

I will note that I stopped ALL my advertising around July 5. I was a bit nervous as to the websites sustainability since I had been paying for ads for so long but the website actually did pretty well averaging around $550/day with $0 in ads being spent. So from July 5 - Aug. 29 I hadn't been running any ads.

I just started running ads again on FB & IG. If you see from the screenshot below, I've noticed that IG advertising has increased much more from when I was running ads. I believe this is due to the 'monkey see monkey do' effect. I was doing pretty well off IG ads initially and I think the more others were, the more we were talking about which drove the rest of the business owners to go and start running ads there, driving everyone's CPC rates up. FB ads still continue to be pretty inexpensive if you know what you're doing.

I have a Pinterest page and also a WANELO page and Shopify has really simple apps that allow you to post all your items on those platforms in buyable formats so that people can buy products directly on WANELO and directly on Pinterest. Pretty easy and basically free sales. I advise to use the free Shopify apps in their Shopify App Store.

I will try and post another update after I've been running ads for about a month or so just so we can see the progress of store growth WITH ads and WITHOUT ads.

I forgot to mention, I'm trying to start an ELITE Mastermind Networking Group as I would like to network and chat with others that are successful. If you're interested I posted a separate post on it here: http://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/elite-ecommerce-mastermind-group.873353/

Thanks buddy. I'm actually adding new products all the time to the website. Sometimes I sell the most absolute random shit. I almost want to call the bnuyer and be like "Are you sure you want to buy this??" Like I'm being Punk'd or something lol.
I laughed so hard on this, can't handle it :D:p

Hey llandrew if you're still active is there any chance you can possibly send me a message (can't send one myself I think because of post count but im an old time member.)

I got myself into the same damn journey as you, and stumbled upon your post while I was doing research. I'm about two weeks in and trying to get my FB ads to start working, they're getting engagements but no sales. Anyway, i'm in DESPERATE need of a mentor. If you'd possibly be able to spare a few minutes here and there, that'd probably be life changing for me. Just need some guidance. Thanks :)

I'm trying to, I just have 2 other businesses to run during the day so my time is limited at times.

Not quite sure I understand the Question dude.

Bulky enough to not pay any shipping on AliExpress for them (if that answers your Q).

Really? I've just started doing some SEO with Cecilia at SEO SHARK and I see a couple of the keywords have begun getting traction, probably not because of her work though as I literally just started. Would love to know more on why Shopify's platform may not be SEO friendly though. I do personally see that the only structural edits I'm allowed to make are for the Title and Meta Description (aside from using tags and being able to add alt-img's descriptions in the product posts). So yes, it is limited to an extent as far as being able to knock out some great on-page SEO.

Man, I've noticed some great traction with Instagram ad's. You have to have a "sexy" product though. Running an AD for free 500 business cards with first purchase VERSUS running an ad for 70% off all nissan maxima halo headlights can have a pretty night and day reaction. You need to remember the demographics that are mainly on Instagram too. People will do a full checkout on their mobile if the process is seamless and your website runs smooth. But if you looked at my numbers, there's still a lot of room for improvement!

Hahaha, love that Costanza profile pic.

Yep, he's correct. Only my 10th order. No orders today yet though.

I've actually messaged a number of people trying to get shoutout 4 shoutout and it's a little bit more difficult than it seems. Some blogger with 50K followers said she'd do it for $150. I told her my ROI would be better putting $150 into Instagram ads and that her price is extremely high and has no logic behind it aside from her just saying 'that's what I charge'. For $150 I would receive probably 62,000 guaranteed impressions in ADs. I'd only be seen by a slice of her 50K followers.
These shout-outers are getting more expensive. I asked one user to do a shoutout for my product - she had 50k followers and I was shocked when she said she'd do it for $200.. jaw-dropping

If you do the free item + shipping you're gonna see a lot of abandoned carts, where as if you ran a modern ecommerce store and were upfront with your prices and offered free shipping as a surprise, you'd probably see a lot less abandoned carts. Doing the giveaway method, there's no way around this. I've calculated my conversion rate to about %1-%2, so for every 100 visitors, I might get one or two sales.

Nyayks!! I'm doing the free item + $9.99 shipping and had an abandoned cart the second day. LOOL I'll probably change everything to free shipping and just continue on with IG promotion...
