Hey guys, I've got an EMD.NET (exact match domain) ready, should I get it or just pick a random domain? What's Google's relationship with EMDs nowadays? :D

If it's a short keyword, I usually go for the EDM, but if it's longer then something brandable. Either way, doesn't effect rankings if you everything else right. At least in my experience.

In my experience, I have found that if the EMD is short, then go for it. If it's very long like " buybestbaseballglovesforkids.com " then it looks stupid.

If your keyword doesn't look too stupid as a domain name, then don't worry about it and buy it.

What I have found that matters the most is that you brand your domain and SEO it properly. Proper logo and graphics, Social Media accounts just like a big brand would and of course have lengthy and in-depth content that is properly optimized in addition to the rest of your website.

I've never had a problem ranking them but I don't throw up cheap-looking piles of crap with a rank and bank strategy, it's a business with long-term goals in mind.

I think EMD should be a way to go ONLY if the domain is short and meaningful. Otherwise, just avoid it

For SEO purposes EMD's only weigh a tiny bit. It'll only make a difference if you're tied with 2nd place and it'll give you a slight boost.

As others say, go for a easy to type domain rather than for SEO purposes.

Hi OP,

Great question! Despite all the propaganda and Google's "EMD Update", EMD's still do carry some worthy added benefits when it comes to the ranking process. Usually you can shave some time off the ranking time-frame and hit Top 3 relatively easier then a non-emd domain. However an aged and reputable site will ALWAYS out perform a brand new site, EMD or not, so keep that in mind!

As others have also said, if you decide to go this route make sure you get an EMD that is short and contains just your keyword.

Partial match EMD's aren't nearly as powerful as EMD's, so if you can't snatch an EMD with a TLD then go for a custom branded domain.

Just keep in mind though that with today's latest algo, a new site will still take some time to gain momentum in the search engines, EMD or not.

The only way around this is to buy an aged domain and do a 301 redirect. Then you are really cutting the ranking time-frame in half.

Warm regards and best of luck with your ranking ventures!

Keep it short and you will be fine!

I agree with the fact that it doesn't looks nice. But when it ranks easy and u only get traffic from Google etc. Why you don't use a big EMD domain like that? You doesn't have to brand your (micro) niche website.
