Google to attack sites with pop ups in 2017

We'll see how much they impact websites. Tons of websites use popups or popunders, so my guess would be (at least at the beginning), it will only target the worst offenders.

i don't use them on any sites i run just because i find them annoying, so i'm all for it.
Anyway most people have blockers nowadays

They will target sites that use 'certain' types of pop ups and it seems that main target are sites that use interstitial ads where the entire page is taken over by a large ad and that ad is hard to close.

This doesn't mean that every site that uses a pop up will suddenly get slapped next year. Some sites won't get hit at all but I am sure that some carefully worded titles on articles and forum threads will be able to whip up a frenzy of panic. I am also sure that there will be a wave of WSO products about the death of pop ups etc and the '10 steps you must take to avoid having Google rip the arse out of your site'.

Everything changes so be prepared to change with it but I honestly think that if you have a pop up on your site that doesn't cover the entire page then you will be totally fine. Read some more articles on the subject but read them carefully and you'll see what I mean.

Popup and pop under are a nuisance. Finally Google doing something good that actually makes sense.

I think I agree with Shez... I cannot imagine them targeting EVERY type of pop up - would make list building harder!

Yup, lots of pop-unders for live support and other UX features.

I think the live support ones are actually useful. I have a problem when the pop up covers the content and you cannot get rid until you sign up

Not cool...

I do get annoyed by pop-ups...I have never used them on my websites. Customer support ones are useful if they don't auto-expand, blink etc.

So do you think it the end of javascript or the dom of javascript.

I was tault dont design with javascript or ajax

What you think will javascript be turned off on all browsers....

I don't think that the pop-up thing is strongly related to the end of life of java inside browsers. I think these are 2 different trends.

Yeah I agree, not too sure what the connection is between them based on the information in the article that was linked to by the OP.

If popups are scraped the only way is to
Ban all popup fuctions onclicks onovers backbuttons loads of features....

If them features are all stoped javascript will be useless for a web designer...

You got to remeber if you take a amount of functions from javascript your effect other programed functions becouse they want be there to use....

A lot of ppl use javascrpt for fancy buttons , but most can be done with css on it own but most nobs dont relise that.

Why i asked , do you think could this be the end of ajax/javascript above functions at minuimun.....

So what i am saying example javascript can be used but the following not allowed.

Onclick functions
Move over functions
Popups
Popunders
Popovers

No pop boxs or any other forms.
No popup images

Like i say there be a load of ban programming features not allowed so will javascript go dead

It happen to flash so why not javascript?

Html5 right in shite this really happens

JS has many other uses other than pop up boxes so even if all pop up boxes were scrapped (which they won't be) it wouldn't be the death of JS etc.

Look if they want all popups and popunders stoped the only way is browsers turn javascript off ...

What you think there going to go around banding websites for the next two hundred years?

Why i did javascript 3 levels at collage so i no what i am on about .

I am telling you that this new news, they want to put into effect stright away ,

The only way i see that happening is to stop javascript in the browsers

I agree javascript get used for other stuff we all no that , it not java it javascript , java a whole diffrent world . Even thu they interlace , javascript cert and a java cert are very far apart trust me. I no javascript but ill never understand java fully ,

Also java is server side programming and javascript is not

Forget it ill find out my self , i bet exsploer turn javascript off just like they disabled flash......

No this is not how it's going to happen, search engine crawler can "understand" javascript. To help you picture it remember the old 3D view on Firefox. They can "see" the page so they know if an element is blocking the view of the actual content.

Javascript is here to stay for a long time and even if Ajax is not always properly supported (out of the box, because some solutions exist) search engine crawlers are getting better and better at "understanding" it.

The goal of Google here is not to ban all popup but simply to force webmasters to not use annoying marketing techniques, if you say to Google that people visiting this link will see X content then that's what you should give them and not force them to see a "marketing offer".

So the end of javascript? No. It's here to stay and more people are building websites on top of frameworks/libraries so it will be very painful to move away from javascript.

Thank you ,a proper ansaw that better i fully understand you cheers......

Jquery if i remember was a frameworks that ppl
Think useing there javascript programers ....

Like others have said, most sites will be fine. It's a growing standard in the law industry to have a popup/ popunder for live chat. I can say that there is a higher conversion rate with it.

Full page popups really need to go - I don't think anyone will disagree. I also think the frequency of certain popups could pose an issue. There's no reason for a user to be prompted to sign up for an email list when the visit every page.

Some sites do go over the top imho, even some famous SEO blogs really piss me off with full page pop ups all the time and try to hide the X to close.
so I think this could be a good thing, for punters anyway.

Good. That shit is annoying as hell, this is LONG overdue.

FYI many in the know are starting to theorize that the "zombie traffic" that people were seeing from Google has actually been testing for synthetic visual browsing bots... meaning bots that VISUALLY browse the site based on what they see on screen and not by traversing the source code. Such bots would be able to check for things like pop-overs, pop-unders, and other bothersome things to human users.
