Log-in to only read?

Why is it required to be logged in to just read forums?

This isn't a big deal or anything but before I created my user account I could read without logging in.

I sometimes like to read without logging in because it can be any time of the day or late into the night that I would like to have a quick look to see if any new, interesting posts were posted.

I'd like to do this without having to log-in only to find nothing new or interesting.

No biggie, just wondering how once I'm a member I can no longer read without logging in.

"rep" That would have been my next question but I didn't want to get carried away here, haha!

I've given rep (deserved) when people mention it but I can't find anyway in the FAQ explaining how it works.

Is there somewhere I can find and read how rep works and what its purpose is?

(I promise this is the last question!)

I have seen that post in that link before. I had tried researching about rep when someone mentioned it before.

Rep seems to be important so I figured there must be a purpose to it? I had thought it was something that only counts for "traders" (people that sell things or services).

I'll have to do some more searching on it.

Why to log in for reading .. many members here need to read/learn and test directly if the methods are reasonable and valuable ..

there is something important than "rep and thanks counter" :

Clicking "remember me" doesn't work. I've been trying it since I posted this question.

I know other people in other locations that can read without being logged in. There's got to be something simple that I'm missing.

I don't mind logging in most of the time but I feel like something isn't right if I can't read without logging in while others can.
