What VPS to get for wordpress website with huge traffic?

Hi,

I am building a website for a client.

He is expecting to get traffic spikes of up to 10k page views per hour.

He might get some articles of his featured in websites like huffington post and etc. And that would result in him getting huge numbers of visits within in an hour or two.
Besides he has very big reddit accounts and had already managed to drive a lot of traffic to some websites of his friends and crashing their regular cheap shared hosting.

So I decided that he will need VPS hosting.

Now since I have never created a website for a client with such big demands I am not sure what specifiaction is the most important for his VPS

Does he need a lot of RAM? A lot of CPU cores or will just unlimited bandwith be enough??


It will be basic WP website running on average magazine theme with a lot of images and text.


So how much RAM and CPU cores would you recommend?

Thank you for your replly but the thing is that this will happen just sometimes and he doesnt want his site crashing. Othertimes it will be about 15029k page views a day but not an hour. This will be a rare thing but he wants to be safe in order for his not to crash..

The answer is, you don't use a VPS for high traffic websites. Why should you share your website resources with other people on the same server.

The guy sounds like a cheapskate. Brags about the page views but too scared to go out and pay up.
Page views mean nothing if he can't convert. If he converted on 2% of 10,000 page views, that is 200 sales.
Depending on what he is selling, 200 x $X = $200X

If $X = $1, that is $200/day
If $X = $5, that is $1,000/day
If $X = $10, that is $2,000/day

If this guy can't afford a $200/month dedicated server, when he is generating $200/day minimum, he is full of hot air.

If you want the right solution then it would be a dedicated server.

You could go vps to start and upgrade. But you will get to a level where you cant upgrade any more on the VPS and then will have to migrate again to a dedicated server.

Best to just got that direction to start.

A VPS or a Cloud would be a good option for your requirements.
Cloud is highly scalable hence you may add more resources anytime as needed. Is there's any budget for this?

If you expect some big traffic spikes you'll probably save a lot of money with an automated scaling system like AWS is doing with Beanstalk, instead of having a big dedicated server running at 2% of it's capacity most of the time

Use digitalocean 4 GB Ram Vserver and a CDN for the images and you can handle 30k pageviews per hour with this setup.

In the end he decided that cloudfare is not such a bad idea as it will save him the money

cloudfare will help you in rendering your website faster based on current location of webusers (cache version) however when it comes to actual processing of incomming request like database updates or anything like that then the specification of your server would play a vital role.
