I am American but sometimes I prefer to spell colour the proper way along with a few other words. I really should go to the UK again but longer and learn how to properly write the English language.

I often use both the British and the American spelling for certain words, too. Grammarians would have a field day if they found out that I don't follow any given path. My biggest downfall is confusing past and present tenses at times, depending on what I am referring to. I often say things as though they were happening now. I don't know why I write so strangely, probably because I don't really care what is acceptable and what is not.

Come to think of it, even native speakers make similar mistakes.
