Hi guys

I wanted to get some recommendations here since some of you know about laptops a lot more than me

Right now I have a Toshiba Satellite L455

it's very annoying. it keeps getting really hot (I blame the weather) and it constantly becomes unresponsive. Every few minutes, firefox shows "not responding" and I have to wait a few seconds for everything to go back to normal.

Forget youtube. If am playing a youtube video, everything becomes so slow that I cant do anything and I have to close the video.

what am I supposed to look for in a laptop? processor speed, what else? I understand those gaming laptops are great but cant afford $1000

any recommendations for dope, fast laptop for $200?

You're probably gonna have to get a $300 one minimum if you're looking to buy new. You might be able to find a good used one to buy though if you're willing to look.

HP laptops seem pretty solid. My Asus laptop is eight years old now and still trucking.

In laptop most important is cpu, if u not play the game. Memory or hdd\ssd size u can upgrade.
I recommend "i3 u" series if u use your laptop only for work in internet, or i5 if u want more. U series is have more low temperature.
8 Gb memory will be full comfort for work. And if u want really fast start system and software put SSD instead HDD.
I reccomend Samsung and ASUS.

Before I start suggesting laptops, what will you primarily be using this laptop for?

spvsocks, thank you, that really helps.
Z, I am using it just for work. I want to have many windows open without things hanging, I want to have youtube playing, 2 firefox windows, 2 chrome windows, microsoft office. I wont be running IM software on the laptop because all of that is on my vps.

$200 can get you a nice used laptop with i3 on it.

Okay, here's the laptop I purchased not too long ago. It's a business laptop called the Dell Latitude E6510. You can find them between $150 and $250, with the latter fetching you the best version of the laptop with a dedicated graphics card and a 1080p screen. Right now, if you search for them on Ebay, you can find several listings for the i5 or i7, 2.6 GHz, 8GB versions for under $200.

Based on my experience with the laptop, it runs most games, including some modern ones; and it should be able to handle the tasks you plan on using it for with ease.
