How did they know that I bought a domain?

Hi All,

I bought a domain 24-36 hours back and today I got an email about website designing services, hosting n all stuff. I'm bit amazed or shocked that how did they knew that I bought this domain and how did they got contact information(might be using Whois). Can anyone help me on this ? I'm very curious to know that. Please reply if someone got what I'm trying to describe.

I know exactly what you're talking about.

My best guess is they're either scraping the whois database somehow, or they're simply paying the registrar for domain registration notifications.
 
Thanks Conor for reply. But still is there any way that they are getting information? How to protect from them? Why Godaddy(i bought domain from godaddy) gave my domain info to them? etc.
 
To protect you from these emails it's better to buy a "Protection Service" along with the domain so that your WHOIS information does not show up when scraped. Most of the domain registrar charge for this on a yearly basis. So my best guess is that the domain registrars themselves give notifications to these companies about any new domain that gets registered through them so that the owner of the domain opts in for the information protection service the next time.
 
Nobody gave away your information, it is publicly available if you didn't purchase Privacy.
 
No, I just bought a domain from Godaddy and paid only for domain.

And, I think its Godaddy who is sharing sold domains list to marketing companies.
 
All domains are publicly visible in online databases, its actually needed for domain transfers and many other things. Thus if you have not bought privacy protection anyone that scrapes or gets live notifications about domains is getting your personal info. With privacy protection all domain registration informations are still visible they are just 'masked' with fake data.

While it wouldn't surprise me if Godaddy were to partake in such practices, they have most likely scraped the WHOIS data using software. If you get WHOIS or Privacy Protection you will receive a lot less of these emails.

I get these emails frequently even with domain protection - I don't know, it seems that if some really do want to find workarounds, they will do so at all cost.

You should always get privacy guard added so that they don't know you. Its primarily through whois db and these can be purchased for new signups. It is assumed a new domain signup is a person potentially just starting a new business venture, hence the new business type calls.
 
I agree with the other responses. Privacy guard is essential if you don't want these emails. You will get them for web design services, seo services, etc. I don't have privacy guard on some of my domains and I get at least 10 emails a week for these different services.
 
Good tip - next time don't buy domain from GoDaddy. Buy from a company that offers free private whois like Namecheap or Internetbs. This way your details will not be public.

8 years on here, 4 posts and 3 on this thread. You bought this account or something ?

As people have said above, you need to order PRIVACY with your domains, GoDaddy charge for this, Namecheap offer first year free on .coms, Namesilo do free for life on their .coms.

What you'll also find is a couple of weeks before the year is up, you'll get emails from loads of ' Domain Services ' offering to renew your domain for $75 and above.
Some of these look like invoices, so if you really are new don't fall for this.

The very basic "lite" plan gives all the info. :D

Look at the last plan "custom 2" they also remove the whois proxy. :p

Edit: someone in the marketplace also had a BST with similar service, but there were some limits.
