Finding high traffic forums is not a must.
You need to find forums that related to your niche and really deliver traffic. And allow inserting link (toward your site), this is most critical for making sales or not.

Actually it kind of is a must. Almost all of the success I've had is from high traffic forums.
The problem with smaller forums is that they tend to have a very "niche" community and everyone there is an expert. Most of your sales however, are going to come from complete beginners doing research for the first time. These people will end up on the big forums and are way more likely to actually listen to your recommendations, instead of arguing back.

When you say high traffic forums, you mean high traffic niche forums, correct? Meaning if your niche is mattresses, then you are finding high traffic mattress-related forums?

Don't focus on "product-related forum". Just think: "On which forum people could need new mattress?" and then you will figure out that there is much more forums than you thought.

Not exactly. You kind of have to think out of the box.
For mattresses it could be mommy forums, home-related, chiropractor forums, sport related forums (especially ones with common backpains, i.e. weightlifting), sleep related forums and so on and so forth.
Think of the benefits of the product (better sleep, less back pain, better sex, fancier home) and then think of groups of people who would enjoy these benefits.
Is it absolutely necessary to go down the blog route? I was reading Nick Flame's old method earlier and he provided the Pickmyshaver.com as an example. Which is similar to this with all the product reviews, etc. And you could then get traffic with the forum posting, etc which saves going down the blog route.

I was thinking the same. One more thing. Forums have worldwide traffic and not country specific. So what happens to non-US traffic? Do non-US people also buy from Amazon.com? Suppose, you're from UK. You come to my site. Go to Amazon. Wouldn't you prefer buying from Amazon.co.uk rather than Amazon.com?
For example: I am being active on a forum and mostly users are from UK. So most of the traffic that I'll generate from there will be UK traffic. So what should I do about this?

As far as i can see, both are very similar. However Meathead say's go down the blog route whereas that method is more SEO orientated.

Does anyone think using paid traffic sources will work as well if you are failing at 5a? Should I try paid traffic? I have zero paid traffic experience. Just started reading on it (any useful links to learn?).

Definitely go the blog route as the forum posts will contribute to your SEO quite intensely and that's extra income - long-term one. This is also what builds your site's value (makes it sellable)
I've had items take a couple of weeks to get shipped, on the upside.
On the downside, I have had orders never marked as shipped, ( although on at least a couple these were family / friends who had ordered ) so I knew 100% they had shipped and been delivered.

Out of 100 shipped items I usually have one or two that never get shipped. Unfortunately they tend to be the more expensive things - I think it's because of returns actually.
