Am I the only one who has a problem with Digital Ocean?

I have pretty much had enough of this hoster now, they offer zero support on issues and have been no help at all.
All my friends who host there have super speedy sites, but mine is well slow with a 6-7 load time. It is not wordpress, trust me, it is as fast as it can go. It is an image heavy site, but I have just tested it on an old shared hoster of mine and it loads in a couple of seconds.
Not really asking for a advice here, this is more of just a rant, and had to vent my anger somewhere, as I have spent hours, I mean days trying to sort this out.....

Anyway time, to rehost the site somewhere and migrate it over.... Another few hours lost which should have been spent uploading content instead of this.....

Digital ocean is unmanaged support this is why they offer zero support. The only responsiblilty they have is to maintain the network. What is your location compared to where the vps is? This might be part of the problem

It's nothing to do with location, it is a server issue, and I am a website developer not server engineer, so pretty much Digital Ocean are useless for me with no support. They should have explained all this before purchase, instead on the front page is says cloud hosting made easy, yeah right, there's been nothing easy about this at all......

Does Digital Ocean ever advertise themselves as a managed service? I see that Digital Ocean advertised very loudly on their homepage that they are "Built for Developers" - from their website in general it is clear that they are not marketing themselves towards someone who wants a tech to help them with all of their site's different issues. If you are looking for a host that offers support with things like optimizing WordPress, Digital Ocean is a terrible option and you should look for a more expensive host that offers managed customer support like wiredtree or Host Gator.

I don't think this is an issue of you getting bad service, but rather you buying a hammer when you wanted a chainsaw.

Whenever I have problems or questions they reply within 12 hours.
Their support is great and they have hundreds of step-by-step tutorials.

from your words, i think you must hire VPS manager.. or move to managed server..
DO only provide server... if you go to tutorial section.. you can find lot's tutorial inside..
good way if you share what website you will build, where script you get and how you build your server..
try learn about centos, nginx, mariadb, hhvm or php7...

You are correct there, I have signed up to the wrong thing, but at the time I was not aware of that.

On their front page it states this, so as a site developer I was under the impression I would go in there, start up my server and get going.

This post was more of a rant, and also as Digital Ocean is so often recommended here, it will let people know

that it is not like a reseller or shared hosting package, and will take a lot more work.

Unfortunately I do not have the time to do all this work myself, as I am too busy building the site, so the only option for me is to migrate to someone else. If I went with someone else at the beginning this site I am working on would have been finished by now.

If I had more time, I would stick with DO, as I do know the basics, but unfortunately I do not have the spare time.

just suggestion for you if you still stick with DO...
if you only create 1 site, hire freelancer to do your job build server...
but if you build lot's website with same concept, hire bash maker to do your job..
i think spend few bucks is fair for your time..
or if you don't want spend money, create new tread in programing section..
like "hey i want build website like BHW on DO, need suggestion"

I used DO for about a year before i purchased my dedicated server (and that Dedicated Server was the best decision i ever made).

DO does offer support, but it is limited. I was pretty happy with their level of support, as they helped me get past some serious issues i had.

I always have used cPanel in the past, as I am terrible with SSH and commands. No time to learn Ubuntu or CentOS, although I do understand some commands and actions.

Anyways, what i did during my 1 year time on DO was to hire someone from a freelancing website to setup mail servers and a free panel similar to cPanel in functionality. This saved me a countless amount of time and was the best $40 i had ever spent.

The only issue I had with DO was that I had to constantly reboot my server, as it would crash often. The reason I switched to a dedicated server was due to the fact that cPanel can reboot itself when it crashes. My websites are viral websites that receive a lot of traffic (50-100k visitors each day). DO couldn't handle this traffic and would crash. This means it cost me lost money in terms of advertising, so instead of acting penny wise and dollar foolish, i ponied up the extra money for a dedicated server and haven't looked back since.

You sound similar to me, I do know a bit about Ubuntu, but don't really have the time to do it, and as you say cpanel does make some laborious tasks a hell of a lot quicker. If I had your kind of traffic I would be running dedicated myself, but as I am getting back into IM the funds just are not there. This is for a new Authority site and I have been trying to keep this separate from all my other sites as it is more of a long term project, but it's just frustrating as the site would have been finished by now if it was on my reseller account.

I know what that the issue is down to mysql load, but have never had this issue on managed accounts before. I just have to decide whether to put the hours into optimising it, or migrating somewhere else. I am sure it would be fine after optimisation, but then what happens when the next issue happens, and as we all know the next issue is always breathing down our necks

OP, DigitalOcean providers good self-managed vps hosting, but of course you have to do some optimization of your fresh apache/php/mysql services .
On your shared hosting you don't have the same laggy issue because shared hosting plans are already pre-configured and optimized .

So , I would suggest you to look about optimizing those 3 also consider activating memcache .

I've switched over to Vultr now, seems to be much more user friendly. My page load is down from 5-6 seconds now to about 2-3 without optimisation yet, so well pleased. I am sure DO could get down to that, but I just didn't have the time, so had to switch.
