The fact is that there any many niches for which forums simply don't work well at all, including my own niche. I have made a few posts myself on the few relevant forums that I could find but I realized a while ago that there's just not much there to work with. I thought I had read somewhere that 5b would deal with a good free traffic source, so I'm just waiting for that at this point.

Instead of waiting you could start by doing some offpage SEO.

Perhaps the reason people are hesitant to start without 5b is because they are hedging their bets? If this method is for people who haven't made any money previously, you can see how they might be hesitant to spend money and time setting their site up only to fail at generating/converting forum traffic. And what if 5b is never posted? The longer you wait, the louder those concerns grow. So they wait. Paralysis by inaction.

I realize you don't owe anyone anything, and that no man has a right to demand a living from another man or tell him how to spend his time. But as a marketer, which is really a student of human nature, you must realize that people are always going to be disappointed when you fail to deliver on something you promised(even if it's free). That's just how people are.

As it stands, the thread seems to be stuck. You keep waiting on people to take action and post some success stories, and (almost) everyone is waiting on you to post 5b so they can take action.

I would have been better off charging for this information rather than giving it away for free in my main time, the attitude of a lot of people around here is very poor.

Perhaps it is. I have had some success with meathead's other method, which relied on the same traffic generation method, not enough to make a living on and not quite passive. The question is whether it's enough to either make more money or make a similar amount of money with less work.

As I said, no one has a right to demand anything of anyone, certainly not a way to make money. I was not attempting to guilt or pressure you. But people have been asking for 5b for a long time and you seem puzzled as to why. As someone who is neither a full time marketer but also not a complete noob, I thought I might chime in.

In my inexpert opinion, the reason many are failing at promoting on forums is the same reason I previously failed: niche selection.

If you're thinking of a niche as strictly meeting a certain set of parameters(i.e: $50-$1000 price, 50 amazon reviews etc.), you fail to give thought to who your actual buyers are. And if you're unlucky to stumble into a nice with consumers who are highly knowledgeable about the product and very internet savvy, it will be impossible for you to self-promote, unless you have a big enough bankroll to buy stellar content. Try going on a hunting forum and promoting your gear, they'll see you coming a mile away.

In my opinion the key to making this work as a noob on a bootstrap budget is to try and sell a medium-high ticket item to buyers who meet the following criteria:
a)middle aged people
b)aren't very internet savvy and not immunized to our wily ways
c)are NOT part of a passionate community centered on the thing you're selling(because then they'll know more than you and your site will be of little value)

I take these types of forums lightly as there is such a mix of helpful people like yourself and some very demanding and ungrateful brats that have grown up to have their asses wiped for them. Don't let this distort your mind, continue with what you do as many of us appreciate all the info you supply. I have been in the biz for 20 years and I can confirm that everything anyone needs to make money is on your first post. I have started to change some of my websites to apply your excellent and easy to follow method. I will update once things all come together and money is made but this will take several months for that as I have about 20 projects on at the moment. This is a long term method that will take time for me to do properly .

I'm not the OP but from my experience I would treat each forum carefully. I own several forums and it's so easy to see when someone comes to just spam. It is much more productive to join the forum and become part of the community, emerse yourself in it and understand who is who. Post, reply but don't post any links until you know the forum well. Once you get to that stage and become a respected member you can link to anything you like anytime you like and no one will question it.

This is EXACTLY what you should do. If the conversation is not there, then go ahead and start it. They key is to try and age your forum profiles a little and be active elsewhere on the forum to build some level of trust with readers. It might look suspicious if the ask and answer accounts were both created on the same day!!

That brings up another important point as I have been reading this thread from the start and have noticed many similar responses regarding the use of forums for direct website traffic. Many people have been complaining about the lack of forums to post questions into or the difficulties of posting in forums where every question is answered by "experts" who know more about a niche topic than they do.

If you are running into a situation like this, as many of you are, then it may be an issue of your niche being too narrow or too product specific. This method, as presented, works really well to get targeted 'buyer' traffic provided you have a large enough niche where many (20+) products are supported. If your niche is too narrow, you will run out of forums to post on very quickly. However, if you think outside the box a little, traffic from forums shouldn't be that difficult.

For example, using the best mattress niche, thinking outside the box would mean finding forums other than just the obvious mattress discussion forums. You would be looking also for forums that address RELATED topics that a proper mattress would be a benefit. Chronic back pain? Sciatic nerve pain? Sleepless nights and insomnia? Better sex? You get the idea....all these forums can be somehow related to best mattresses.

The method is solid for sure but my niche just didn't have much engagement on the forums to get the sales. The trick is actually finding the product niche, the rest is easy. Going to restart with a new one.

Keep plugging away, you will have success as long as you follow several key elements. If I may ask a question, where are you unsuccessful with this? Are you not getting visitors to your website through forums? Are they coming in but not clicking over to Amazon? Are they clicking over to Amazon but not making a purchase?

If you can answer these questions for me, I'm sure someone reading this thread will be able to help you - including me! There are many in your boat for sure and many that could use a little help but are afraid to ask.

This information that oldweb has provided is INTERNET GOLD for those of you struggling with forum posting. Keep in mind that your websites and niches are your source of income - an investment - if you will. This type of investment can provide long-term or short-term returns, it is entirely up to you. With any investment, you need to give a little up front to get those returns you are targeting. The easiest asset that an internet market can invest is their time.

Spend your time to create your forum profiles and be a true member of a community. Contribute to the discussion(s) when possible and be kind towards others. Build trust in these forum communities and treat them like an investment. If you PLAN AHEAD correctly, the correct niche can often result in one or two forums that will bring you continued long-term traffic to 1 or multiple websites. This is where you can really generate profits - by creating multiple, closely related websites that are in closely related niches.

Just because your product niche is narrow does not mean the buyer is in a narrow niche as well.

For example. Not many forums for mini fridges but you can easily ask a RAV4 forum community to give their opinion on which fridge is best for the garage, a or b, with a link to each.

Do moms buy your narrow niche product? Try a mommy forum. Do makers buy storage bins? Try a maker forum or diy forum.

Go general with the forums and ask specific narrow niche questions.

Or, you could just forgo forum traffic for the time being, it's not the end all be all of traffic generation and it's certainly not the only free method around. I believe there's one thread here where one individual didn't even use any forums to generate traffic to his website.
