(Preface: If you are/have made money on Reddit, this post is still for you. I have done it as well, but this article will explain a little known fact that I believe will help everyone.)
People often ask me why I don't focus on Reddit when compared to other highly trafficked websites to drive users to my pages.
Now, I should be clear, I absolutely use Reddit and would never discourage somebody from making a post on there. However, time is money, and money is time, and sometimes there may be better alternatives when it comes to getting highly converting traffic to your website.
For anybody that has made money off Reddit, I have as well, some of my most viral post of been shared on Reddit, and many of my most trafficked and shared articles have been through Reddit.
So this is not meant to discredit any of those things. However, I am going to explain why Reddit is not the same traffic or converting the same as other websites like Facebook, YouTube, or Twitter.
So with all that said, on one of my lower trafficked sites, someone posted a link to one of my articles to Reddit. The reason I know this is because for one, I checked and it was on there, and two I received this graphic on my WP dashboard.
That's right, on day 3 my post was shared, do you notice anything? Well you obviously do; 19% of the users on my site that day had Adblock. Most my other days the average is around 2-3%.
The average traffic on the site is about 150-250 daily, I don't update it a ton so most is organic. So if we account 109 new Reddit users just to postulate, 59 of them had Adblock. So all in all 54% of users from Reddit were using Adblock. No Good.
Would you like to know why that 54% is an interesting coincidence?
That's right, 54% of users on Reddit are between the ages of 18 to 24 or under the age of 18.
In marketing terms we call "the money demographic" 25 to 54. The majority of Reddit's users are essentially children with no money who use adblock.
I had wondered for so long why conversion rates are so much higher with targeted and geo-specific ads on Facebook, or using other methods where I can literally pick the age range I am targeting, or even using an ad or a blog post on a website where I know the traffic is full of adults looking to buy things.
The reason why, is that Reddit is filled with teens and young adults who don't have money, who use Adblock, and don't want to buy anything.
Again, I am not trying to be critical of people who love Reddit or swear by it. I, as you can see, also check it.
But I just want to make users aware why their conversions might be lower on Reddit when compared to other websites a specially if a post does not go viral. Which mine obviously didn't. Someone just shared it and I got 100 extra users. Yay!
This post was meant to be purely informative, not defamatory, and hopefully, help members in the BHW community so please only positive comments or stories if you agree.
It was just to prove a point you may be better off spending or focusing your time somewhere else and weighing out the pros and cons of other different online arenas.
I wrote this with the intent of trying to give back to our community and I hope you guys enjoyed this.
