Hosting 101 The bad and good

Do most of you use the same hosting for all of your websites? or Did u purchased a reseller hosting account or do you have multiple seperate hosting??

I have 2 e commerce sites and i plan on building 5 or more bans sites and i just want to get a general ideal of how to do my hosting.

What are the pros and cons of having multiple hosting or using 1 hosting?

i have 2 VPS accounts with the same company here in the US and one VPS in the UK that i use for my clients and my own projects

i also have several seperate hosting plans dotted over here and in the UK for testing SEO projects too

i use different hosts for country specific projects ie - google.co.uk is supposed to rank UK based servers better for .co.uk than if they where on a US server... although i am not 100% sure i agree with that...

i also use different hosts to spread domains across a range of ip addresses... ie i have all the tld extensions for a particular domain and before i would point them all to the same account, but now i put different SEO orientated content on each site and have them point to the main site all on different servers... just playing around with this one right now so waiting on results...

also any BH projects you might try testing out are best off going on a server not related to your main server just in case ...er you get your servers ip banned or your host terminates your account

The biggest pro is that with multiple servers if something happens to the server everything is on you are not dead in the water. While kind of rare for a server to go down it does happen, and it is better to insure against it. Even with back ups it is easier to set up a few sites on a new host/server than to set up everything.

Lost time is lost money. Plus the BH techniues may get your account shut down/banned as ukesuba points out.

I need to be a hostgator affiliate. I have dealt with them for several accounts over the past few years, and, while I do believe they over state what they rent you for space, I find that their service is good, so is their tech support. I have not had to deal with their tech support very much, as their service is good.
For a VPS I like rackforce, excellent tech support. On my first VPS I really screwed up my DNS zones and they fixed them, at no extra charge, within an hour.

just make sure to get a host with cpanel and whm great functionality and control of your VPS or reseller account...and fantastico for quick script deployment..

What is the difference between VPS and reseller accounts?

A VPS is like a mini dedicated server. Only it is a slice of one really. You have your own DNS, start/stop and reboot capabilities, and can have several IPs that are all yours. You can also install your own add on programs using shell access.

A reseller account is a slice of a VPS, or just an overzealous regular account, usually on a shared server with shared IPs. Nothing is yours. You can get the 'extras' to make it very VPS like, except the shell access. Since you would then have access to all the accounts shared on that server.

It is really worth the money to get a VPS if you can not get a dedicated box. The freedom allowed is great, especially if you are using resource hogs. If you make your MySQL large and sluggish that is your problem on a VPS, on a reseller account if someone else makes the database large and sluggish that is also your problem.

I have 2 sites with hostmonster, 3 site (1 reseller account) with hostgod, and 1 site with this other one that I forgot about. I ave a lot of sites lol. Half of them are dead though.

Bad experiences with all three. Hostgator gets my thumbs up, you just can't do anything too black hat on their servers.

I've had a VPS at first and then moved to a dedicated when the VPS was full. Another one to avoid: Burst net, they suck and you will have lots of downtime.

I stress again that rackforce is excellent for service and support. No shared hosting though, only VPS and ded boxes.

Bans is considered as white hat site.

what are your reviews on HostGator?

I were in hostgator over 3 months. I never got any problems, pretty good hosting for whitehat websites. However, don't use their for blackhat websites because they care about complaints much

HOSTGATOR! Cheap, excellent service, almost zero down-time. You can ask for different addresses and have two accounts (or more) on two servers. Linking back-and-forth makes it look a lot less like all sites are owned by one person. My ten cents.
