I noticed there are services that do this. I'm assuming there's more to buying likes than vanity. I can't make the direct or indirect relationship to monetization.

Why would people do it?

When would they start doing it?

If it's towards internet marketing, then one of the reasons is to make their page, post or site look popular to draw more attention and gain organic likes. Let's be honest, a page with 0 likes looks shitty.

If it's non-internet marketing related, to feed their own egos and make themselves look popular.

Both end up being for the same reason.

Social proof.

That makes sense. It answers the why.

When would you buy them and when would you stop?

to get featured on hashtags.

popularity in niche

That makes sense for +1k likes orders.

I'm sure a lot of people sell "cheap" shout outs with these likes and try to scam people with it.

Or sell the account, make it appear like it has good engagment etc.

Personally I would buy it to get to the explorers page but I don't think it's needed at all, buying likes.

Recently have been thinking about doing this. If you buy a fair amount of likes, you actually get featured in the trending tab for the hashtag and thus get more likes and followers. Helps overcome the border.

Buying 1-2k likes for a post gets it in the top post for all my hashtags. Between 250-1m post in those hasgtags. Got in the top posts of a hashtag with over 46m posts aswell! Not sure if its worth it yet tho, still figuring it out!

Not worth it. I have tested this in the past and it does get you to toppost. But the amount of followers it brings in, is not that much.

The accounts that have bought fake likes are all fucked up now regarding engagement. IG must have been able to trace it down.

If you really want to buy likes, buy powerlikes from legit BIG accounts. Those will bring in REAL followers.

Yes you are correct.... if you buy 10k likes within 20 min of the photo being posted you will be featured in the top posts which equals more organic followers

I've always done it organically. Follow/unfollow, likes, comments, etc.

Has anyone done a study to see if it's worth it buying 1k or 2k likes per photo? How many new followers and organic likes did you get afterwards?

What about 3k-5k likes per photo?

I've not done a study on it. However, I have an account which organically reach the top post of some pretty big hashtags >20m, a few times a week. It brings in good amount of additional likes, but only a few followers. So in this respect it is not worth to buy 1k-2k likes, to get featured on the top posts of hashtags! What is worth a good amount of money is to get huge accounts to like your photo, and only your photo ASAP after it it published.

Yes, it's all social proof, increased chances to get into explore section and hashtag-related top posts - it improves conversion to followers. However, buying likes gives your account away as botted - it is hard to find a decent provider that will deliver the likes in an organic fashion: timed (not coming in one big bunch over a minute after delivery), distributed between posts you specify in proportions you like etc. The worst here is that likes will come form bots of poor quality: they will be only recently created, with no info in bio, few photos etc. They will not even try to resemble your TA and will soon be banned - taking your likes away.
Ideally you'd buy followers (bots, but quality ones, with photos, real-like activity etc.) and then pay for likes coming from them - everything will look real then and you'll benefit from larger scale of your account.

It helps boost your IG post to the top results for the hashtags used... IG will see you as the authority on that subject ;)

Exactly. Being in toptags means nothing.

Its about getting on explore, then you will see what intense traffic means. I even got some pics hitting explore without hashtags...and the followers were flowing in like crazy.

How do you get on explore? :)

From the Instagram help section:

"Posts are selected automatically based on things like the people you follow or the posts you like. You may also see Featured video channels, which are curated to include things we think the Instagram community will enjoy."

That's true, it's all about quality. cheap fake likes will just ruin your account, while REAL likes can push it to the next level. However there are just a couple of legit providers out there, most of them very expensive.
