Purchasing and old domain for seo

I am a newbie so be patient Lots of quesitons all at once.

Will an old registered domain have higher ranking than a new registered domain? Given they both have the same content/links and etc.

Can an old registered domain be transferred and be optomized for keywords that are within the domain name and still maintain utilize its old rank/links and etc.?

I want to know, if I am doing seo for keywords, should I get a new domain or try to purchase an old domain?

One of the factors that SE's look for is the Age of the domain, so it will be a plus factor if you registered an old domain but still you have look if that old domain has been drop, banned, etc..

For me, I would purchase a domain that has my keyword in it and also check its background if it has bad record on SE's or not. It would hold a much greater weight if you use an old domain rather than a new domain as the SE's treat those domains as different when it comes to different factors.

How exactly would you do this? I doubt G & Y publish an official "banned domains" list like the RBL's that exist for IP addresses and emailing.

Or maybe such a thing does exist....

Aren't the backlinks reset once the domain is expired or transferred? How would you avoid this if this is the case?

I would think that be up to the webmasters of the sites that have those backlinks on their sites...wouldn't you?

However, if the links stay "broken" for more than a few months, I'd guess that the Google & Yahoo spiders would notice that and therefore discount the links, maybe even void their relevancy ("link juice") altogether.
