Recommendations for a cheap laptop just for BHW type work?

I need to start running software such as mass planner etc, and as this is Windows based I need to pick up a cheap laptop.
I'm currently mac only and as my current laptop is a macbook air it is not really suitable to run as a work machine due to me already having limited space. I also don't really want to clog up the machine with work stuff as it is used for my music.
All this laptop needs to do is my BHW type of working, running a couple of small programs etc.

I have looked at some net book type things which are cheap as chips but not sure if they would be up to the job.

If they are not suitable I would have to jump up a price bracket to something like this

I would prefer to get a laptop on the smaller side of things as I do travel a fair bit, and as I would then be carrying two laptops about I would prefer to keep the size to a minimum.

Anyone found any good deals in the UK recently?

Check out chromebooks. They're cheap and crazy fast but they run on Chrome OS so they don't support .exes. But you can change the OS and depending on the programs you use, they may also be avaliable for the Chromebook. It looks like it has no memory but it's actually nothing bad because you don't install programs directly on the harddrive. It uses some cloud storage so 50GB is more than enough.
 
In theory anything newer ish will get the job done. With a background in tech, I'm a believer in buying better now, instead of having to rebut again since buying older/cheap tech gets out dated faster. What's your budget?

Personally, I would go for an i5, 8gb ram and SSD for any workstation grade laptop. Realistically id go i7 for extra processing power while running bots and scripts in the background.

I personally use a VAIO canvas Z, which is basically a MacBook pro in a surface pro form factor, but this is my mobile workstation.

probably not the answer you wanted, but I wouldn't settle for something you're going to like. Lenovo has excellent lappy's along with dell. I actually think dell has an older i5 tablet that runs full windows that you can get for cheap. that a actually might be a good look since you want to be mobile and keep the gear down, just know going in its old tech.
 
Thanks all, but the Thinkpads are about £450 upwards which is more than i'd want to spend on a laptop that is only going run a couple of programs like Mass Planner, FaceDominator etc.
I did look at the chrome books, but i do need it to run offline sometimes and I do need Windows, so was thinking of a sub £150 windows machine with a 128gb usb drive for extra space.

As the title says that I am just looking for a very cheap laptop just to run one or two programs. If things work out and the money starts coming in I would then consider getting rid of my Macbook Air and cheap laptop and get a good Windows laptop for everything. Most of my work I do is on my Mac Pro at home such as anything internet based, dreamweaver, photoshop etc. So at this current time a high powered laptop is not something I quite need yet. :)

Look at HP and Asus' budget offerings, I've seen them go for less than $200 on specials, I still have an HP 15 and it works fine, worth the small price. My only slightly negative experience with HP is having a Probook 4515s that burned out after 4 years of daily usage.

I've got Vitualbox installed, but I can't seem to get it running, so I am more looking at getting a dedicated machine.
 
I think you can get cheapie hosted VPS for dirt cheap. I've seen ads for $10-20/mo, but I dont know what the bandwidth cap is.
 
I advise you against small screen laptops, your eyes will suffer. Other than that consider an i3 cpu, 4 gigs of ram, and an ssd if you can afford.
 
I've got a super old Acer I bought off my dad, just to use while I'm working upstairs. I paid $100. Its an Acer Aspire 7551-7422. It has a quad core, 4GB memory, 500GB HDD, 17 in. HD screen, etc. It does exactly what I want it to do. It's old as hell, but it is a good machine. I told my dad I'm going to keep it until it literally craps out on me.

Acers usually run super cheap but they're solid. I've seen them go for $350 with top of the line specs. When this one finally goes to laptop heaven, I'll be buying another one.
 
Have a look at refurbished laptop distributors. They are usually brand new and come at half the price.

The title said cheap. Do those not start at $1000? Might as well look at Apple for that price point, and just get a Windows VPS for the clunky Windows software.
 
Damn, that's expensive! I've never paid more than $20 for one.
