hekke's Keyword Research Guide [Examples Included]

Hekke , your guides are great for newbies like myself. I can see you becoming moderator on this forum sometimes in future. Wish you even more success.

Hi hekke, great write up.

What if the niche i choose has 0 monthly searches for best product, product reviews, cheap product, BUT product keyword itself has 1000+ searches and its low comp KW (11-18 keyword difficulty according to kwrevelaer)? What do you recommend?

Of course i checked top 10 in SERP and mostly are e-com/forum/youtube with high DA but PA is 1 or something low. No H1, no KW in url, etc.

Should i just optimize my page/post for the product KW and build quality web 2.0s to bump up my PA?

Because there are different brands that make the same product I've silo'd the site so the brands of the product are in each category and posts in that category link to each other. No affiliate links posted yet, and my articles are scheduled. Home page is setup as static page that will have a pillar article. Pillar article will be divided into sections and each section will have h1 title linking to silo brand in the navigational menu. Pillar article will also include comparison charts and will be roughly 2k words.

Looking forward to your response.

Amazing guide here. So glad that you posted it and I found it to read.

Hi hekke excelent guide, i have a question if you don't mind me asking, it is regarding long tail keywords, i found some keywords with 880 - 3600 ms for US, let's say the keyword i'm trying to rank for is "what are the best nike shoes to run a marathon" results with 'allintitle' show only 7 results, results with 'inanchor' show as little as 1 result, however the top 10 results are authority pages due to the fact that the keyword "nike" or "nike shoes" is in their title, even if they aren't optimized for the whole phrase (what are the best nike shoes to run a marathon) do you think that would be a good keyword to target, since you would be pretty much the only one optimized for it?

Thanks in advance.

Unless the product will give you like $xx-xxx/sale you won't make much from that. At #1 you'll get roughly 300 visitors a month, let's say 50% of those click to Amazon that's 150 and then assume you convert at 6%. That results in 9 sales per month. If you get $10 per sale, that's $90 per month - if you get $50 that's $450 a month. These number are OK, but since the keyword you will be targeting is a e-commerce favored product you might have a hard time ranking that no matter what.

I have ranked higher than brands before however with those type of articles, so you could get some traffic by writing articles about "Best BRAND Toasters" for example. Just make sure the time and money you put in can pay off itself and after that it is all profit.

No idea if web 2.0s will be enough to push those away, that's a hard one to judge without knowing the keyword and even then it is hard to really understand the competition. You'll have to try and figure out a way to spot a easy keyword. I have provided some of my "tips" in this guide but trying is always the key. You can read 100's of threads about keyword research, but in the end it is down to you trying it and finding your own way of doing it! :)

Yes, that is a great keyword to target in maybe an article about a the best nike running shoes OR make an article solely for the exact keyword. It can fit great in a silo (if you are planning to make a site exceeding 50+ pages) or just add topical relevance to your site! :)

Thank you ThopHayt! :)

Hello again hekke,

I just wanna ask about the low competition of semrush, how much percentage of a keyword in the keyword difficulty would be the best for you? before making an article.

I don't look at competition for articles, I look for them in niches. I target everything in the niche, not just a handful of topics. If the niche is easy, I know that and I can rank #1 for everything :)

Thanks! One last question.

I am starting my first authority website but I am having dilemma of choosing whether do I have to choose a brandable website name that tackles many amazon products or a website for a specific niche? For example, the name of the website I choose is themachinery.com which can target different products like lawn mower, air compressor, pressure heater etc... Or a lawnmower.com that targets only lawnmower products?

Btw I don't like to target a specific keyword since I am on a tight budget but I will post many articles as many as I can with targeted keyword ofcourse.
Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend not to start a broad site if you are running on a tight budget. Use a domain name that fit for broad purposes. So in this case, and in any case, themachinery.com would be a lot better. I have stopped using EMDs since it is easy to over-optimize with those and it is hard to expand those type of sites with just 1 niche.

Start with 1 niche, and expand by the earnings you get from the first niche. :)

Dont know how to thank you more ! I really appreciate your value information !
I have some questions because I'm not very clear after reading:
1. Some keywords when I search , the top results are e-commerce websites => I used to think e-commerce website like amazon or etsy/ebay are very strong because of their massive pages, but based on what you said above, they are not strong aren't they ?
2. Is it right that social platform like youtube links are easy to beat ?
3. Between ClickBank and Amazon which one do you have better conversion rate ? I concern about it because CB pay much more higher % than Amazon.
4. I'm very curious about the content development part, because I think in order to make them decide to buy >$100 products, listing best products + describe their features are not enough, so how can we affect them to buy with our content ?
5. Another question maybe quite off-topic, sorry, what if the user don't order at the first time they click on the affiliate link, what if they come back and purchase, does it still count ? And what if they click on two affiliate links from other person as well?
6. Does the "Competition" info in GG Keyword planner really matter ? Because some keywords have HIGH competition but when I searched, there are many weak sites rank for it. I guess that's for SEM more than SEO ?
7. My case is I found a very good niche, target for UK market, the general keywords research for the NICHE is good (high search volume and high possibility to rank) but keywords for the PRODUCTS are not easy and products are only $30 - $150 (mass products), so I'm thinking about Adsense or other affiliate with higher % commission, plz let me know if you have any suggestion :)
Thanks a lot Hekke! All the best to you !
And sorry for the long and many questions ..... I'm woman so I'm quite more talkative j/k :P

What an excellent and detailed guide it is. Love you Hekke. Keep it up!

Fact: My keyword collecting process have actually changed quite a bit since I started writing this guide (as you can see in the beginning the 6 is crossed over as I didn't get it done when I started 6 months ago). Previously I'd gather every keyword over 40 searches a month and then have a list of 8-9 pages of different keywords that I needed to sort into the right article. I sometimes sent 100+ keyword to my writer to include in a 3000 word text - it was getting out of hand and I spent around 1 hour on each article. I cannot afford to spend that much time on each article as my time is limited (and valuable) and the 2-3 articles my writer writes daily took me 2-3 hours to prepare.

Now I only include keywords that I feel are important. For example different synonyms for a product, and of course the most searched terms. This have made my process so much faster. Previously I even did keyword research for each and every product included in the "best of"-articles, which is ridiculous. I let my writer just write based on 10 keywords and hopefully he might add some accidental (or natural you might call them) keywords.

Great post! Really interested in your thought on the tangential issue of multiple keywords on a singular page versus different pages. If you we're looking to rank for a "set" of particular keywords (i.e. kw phrase 1, kw phrase 2, etc...)

  • Have you had success in getting multiple phrases ranked for a page? (I assume yes)
  • If you did have success, was it a result of varied exact phrase anchors texts from backlinks? or something else?
  • What would your approach to rank the phrases then become?
For example, Backlink1="kw phrase1" Backlink2="kw phrase2" Backlink3="kw phrase3" then various branded, naked, generic backlink anchors on top of it?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

WOW! What a great guide! Loved reading it! Thanks a lot for this awesome guide.
