I have a former coworker who lives in a $5.5m, 7,000 square foot home in Tennessee. He inherited it when his parents died in a car accident a few years ago. He makes $75k a year, and treats the taxes, insurance, etc as a "mortgage".

My wife is working with a pair of trauma surgeons who pull in close to a million a year easily. They live in a $300,000 home because a) it's paid off, and b) that's all they need. Their big expenditure is travel.

Someone could buy a $100,000 fixer upper during a down period and between it going from buyers market to sellers market and doing DIY projects to increase value the value jumps to $250,000. Its totally independent of their income.
