Well it seems like the end of google as being the dominant search engine may be coming near if they are willing to back down instead of ignoring some bogus law.
For my personal searches i never use Google, the results are most of the time horrendous and totally not what i am looking for or it is outdated, i use Bing and duckduck and i get better results, never really understood why google is so praised for there searches, cus most of them are just useless.
I have to disagree with you. If you want smut, there are sites that specialize in smut. Just because someone can make a smarmy post about a person does not mean that the dirt needs to be on the front page of Google. Newspapers age and any nonsense fades over time, but a search engine is a little different because the results tend not to age. This harms people in the long run and is deleterious to society.
The Eu. does have the power to completely ban Google or other search engines. However, that power does have consequences too. Due to a law in Spain, Google stopped publishing all news from Spanish companies in Google news. Within a week, the agencies were back at there politicians demanding a change to the law. The law was changed.
In the Neatherlands, the privacy laws of the Eu. are tightening without harm to the search engines.
Russia completely banned Google. However, Russia has a different preferred search provider, Yandex. No one even knew that Google had been banned. Likewise with China.
Google needs to clean its act up, else it will do the Dodo.
Thats why you gain information on the politicans, if you know who is having an affair, who is gay, into trannies, into children, an alcohollics, drug addict etc. You have power over them and they won't be making laws that mess with your company.
I once had a person that attempted tobribeblackmail me. She was thrown over my shoulder, taken across the street, unceremoniously slammed down in the parole office while I shouted out pointing "She has something she wants to tell you." She ran out of the office crying.
I had another attempt to blackmail me. Told him "do it." He did. A brief reading of the smut shows that it was a person that had a grip to pick because I was working to limit the reach of mugshot sites in the search engine.
The threat of blackmail only works if you give a damned about what others think or the power that they think they have over you. When it comes to governments, their only real power is corporeal - they can kill you. Think about what the online protests against SOPA did. Politicians backed down quickly. Not because they fear exposure, rather they fear the lose of power and income. Google can do nothing about that while the politician can do a lot against Google.
I think you are incorrect here. If we look at companies, to get to the top where you can exert power and control, you have to claw and chew and backstab your way up.Companies at several times throughout history have had way more power than most nations, if it happened then it can happen now. But most companies are run by people with morals at ethics and not a drive for power and control.
In the Neatherlands, the privacy laws of the Eu. are tightening without harm to the search engines.

Show me what laws have been changed here to accommodate Google
That sentence does not say what you are trying to imply that it says. Re-read it.
From what i know Netherlands it's still a favorite place for anyone who host warez/porn because of their laws.
I don't think google will ever die, even if it would die there would be many others search engines to use.
