LOL Yeah I'm serious about this post, it may look stupid funny w/e but I've got an Intel Pentium 3 PC with 1GB (or was it 1.5GB) RAM and 2 hard drives one 60GB (or 80GB, can't remember need to check) and the other 40GB. The PC is running windows XP, it's quite fast for it's age and it works really well but no one uses it so I thought of selling it on ebay but lmao no one will buy it and even if someone does then all the postage and packaging crap will just not make it worth my time + eBay fee's, then I thought of selling it in parts but that's a crap idea too. So I was wondering, what could an unused PC be useful for? Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can use it for searching aliens in universe :) ( Participate in SETI ) or take part in more useful projects b0inc.berkeley.edu or f0lding.stanford.edu

Cheers

yes use it for torrenting pc or put tversity on it to stream movies to xbox and such. Or use it for linux firewall.

Send it to me. My PC sucks and I could use one that can do more than one thing at a time. I would be sure to hit the thanks button for you.....!!

Automation, or make a YouTube video of you smashing the CPU and get tons of views. Then use the monitor to dual screen, or make a fishtank out of it. Check on Instructables :)

LOL at some of the above, I'm looking for something profitable and I also like the idea of the projects which Dzixond posted about. But anyway, never mind and thanks.

install apache n stuff on it.... n sell hosting for $2-3/m on it on webhostingtalk ... or DP... those guys love bargains... u'll sell 100 hosting packages.. and thats like $200-300 from a old PC...! they dont even know what a data center n stuff is... so who gives a shit!

thats what i would have done! :)

Bro..u r using PIII with 1GB???I doubt as u might be using a 810et board and that supports 256 or 512 Max...I also used to have some time back!!I tried to upgrade that but as it was the only limitation for it that we cant add more then 512 MB SDRAM and not more then 1.3Ghz processer!!!

Put linux on it... Just the necessary stuff, no X Desktop...

Then set up some scripts to auto-tweet, theres a couple php programs out there that do WP commenting, etc. Use the webserver to test your sales pages before you copy them up...

Tons of productive things for a machine like that.

This is just a suggestion but why don't you fill it up with p0rn. And watch like a 6 hour masturbation trilogy: Best But in west 1 ,2 ,3 etc.....I mean, you know what they say:

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGHT P0RN!

sell traffic.

10 autosurf's running at once, just manage where u send it to...

an easy thing to do is to just say u'll charge 300-500 for one million visitors
and let ure comp run till you hit that mark..
make sure u use a domain to redirect or something so u can track hits

should make u an extra k a month with only like an hour or two's work a month

i like the hosting idea... but what if some asswhole takes up all ure bandwidth?

thats simple BAN!

and u gonna limit the products to like 100mb space and like 10gigs BW... if somebody uses more than 2 gigs... BAN him! :D

yea good point....... and keep his 3 bucks LOL

btw welcome back berry, good to see you're active again

I've got a couple of old PCs and i'm going to hook one up on my network running FreeBSD and whatever else i need, Apache, PHP, MySQL, PHP/cURL, and learn how to work on a server from the command line so i can get rid of stinky shitty control panels. It'll also make for a good test bed.

As i've never done this before though, i suspect it'll be a bit harder to set-up than my Windows Networking experience leads me to believe. I just wanna put one, maybe both behind a desk and run them without monitors strictly as servers for me to learn how to crash. :D

Yeah, I thought of doing this too but my only problem is my ISP, I'm not sure they would be too happy if I did something like this.

My bad :p, I couldn't be bothered to check it out when I posted this thread and once I saw your reply I was like, wait a moment, he's right, lmao, it's actually a Pentium 4, 2.4GHz with 1.21GB RAM, it's somewhere from 2001 an old Packard Bell PC which I cleaned up added RAM, added a new case + took apart the heatsink and processor to clean them up and then joined them back together with that thermal stuff, forgot what it was actually called.

LMAO :lmao: Can't say more about this. :D

Yeah that's actually something I thought of too but the main problem I see here is where would I actually sell the traffic, I've seen loads of people selling traffic for so so damn cheap that It looks like it's not worth the hassle but I may rethink this again. And about the hosting, I've actually got unlimited bandwidth with my ISP but main problem is that I doubt my ISP would be too happy if they found out which they sooner or later will.

Use it to auto-simulate sexual intercourse with robots. Big money in robots.

??? lol ???

nah..its just stupid to host your website on your own computer at home as the power consumption is bigger than what you pay for a shared account..

Plus you don't have the right temperature in your room..overheat....and that can result in a loss of data....

Furthermore you have to secure that computer and keep an eye out for floods and hacks...

Another problem is that your provider might be down more...as they do not provide that stable acces to households....and if your ip is dynamic it's even worse .

It's not worth it in my opinion
