If you are that paranoid, don't pretend to be the car manufacturer and in addition put a TOS/disclaimer in your site for your visitors to accept before they enter the giveaway, which protects you on the legal side.

A family friend of ours actually fell for this exact scam (and it is a scam) on fb a few weeks or months back. I called him on it sayin 'mate, you've been had' and his mom did too lmao. The fb fan page was pretending to be a range rover fan club.
But you gotta do better than scamming people and tricking them into doing something for a little bit of cash. Big money is in offering something of real value to people. Not this crap.

Everyone has to start somewhere and these kind of methods are perfect, because they provide a quick ROI, don't need any huge capital to start (most people starting their IM ventures are on a tight budget) and are mostly newbie-friendly. They are good for making some startup cash, so then you can move on to bigger projects that provide real value to people as you say.
Back in 2009, when I first started, I remember I did something similar with PPI & CPA in different niches and with some other twists. Do I feel bad about it?! Absolutely not. You may be right, it is scam, however there are 3 points to consider. First of all, you aren't scamming people and stealing their money. Most of the offers they complete are free and only cost them time.
Second of all, if people really think someone is gonna give them a free car, which in most cases costs tens of thousands of dollars, then they deserve to be fooled. Marketing like this exists everywhere, not just in IM where we "scam" people to complete offers so we make money. Check every major industry in the offline world (start with the local ads you see everyday on the streets) and you will see tons of businesses making false promises and delivering shitty services. They actually take money away from people, not just time like we do. And a lot of people fall for that every day, hence why this kind of marketing works.
Third, it doesn't have to be a scam. You can do these kind of giveaways in a completely legit way, like many freebie websites do. Of course, you are not gonna give away cars, but other prizes such as phones, tablets, computers, niche-specific items, etc... can be given away if you generate enough profit from the campaigns. That way, you can sleep better at night... that is if you don't already!

I'm curious about this as well. I presume at some point you have to be upfront about who you are in order to collect the cash - with the affiliate I mean.

Hosting and domains are needed for everything you do online, so yeah you need to buy them. To design/develop landing pages, you can do it yourself if you have the knowledge (Photoshop/AI, HTML/CSS/JS) or hire someone to do it for you either on the marketplace here, fiverr or any other freelancing platform.
