Is ranking categories same as ranking posts?

I want to add links to point to my site categories to rank them as they have more search volume than the posts.

Does that work fine?

Assuming you're using Wordpress, your theme must not be displaying the category description. You can either create a child theme and change it to show the category, change your theme, or try using a plug in like "Category Description Widget".

So I need to do that to try to rank the categories?

Yes, you do the same as your posts or any other pages.
I normally add anywhere between 450 - 2000 word article on the category page.

See,create one page of category and do better page title and meta for this page and then start ranking it.Works fine.

I think Ranking Post will be more easy than Category, Because many On page factors that are present in Post not in Category

yeah , that's a really good point

if you properly silo your website and point some strong links to your category you will pretty much rank for all the posts under that category ( juice will pass for sure )

Some themes will show category info and others wont. I always have to adjust most themes to get it to show the content. With some decent content and good onsite SEO category pages can dominate. You should see some of my category pages for one of my online stores. How to videos, bulleted lists, images with alt tags, tons of content (to the point that my products are pushed below the fold) pretty much every ingredient for good onsite SEO. If you want to beat Amazon, it needs to be done. Basically I'm saying category pages can kick ass in the serps if you pimp them out.

Yep. This is something I mentioned in my on-page SEO guide here on this forum.

However, some people may still feel uncomfortable with leaving them indexed, or so I was told by a member in my thread.

Posts>Categories>Edit>Descriptions.

I already done that, but this article is never shown. I don't mind if it is shown or not unless google bots crawl it and rank me for it.

Google doesn't know the difference between pages, posts, categories ...etcThe know Title, H tags, Content, Keyword Density .... and all other metricsSo, if your category is optimized with proper on seo ( some content, title, good kw density ) then to google, it's just like any other pageIn Conclusion, Google rank .html pages... Posts, Categories ...etc are wordpress related and has nothing to do with google
