Anchor Formula - Do you follow a set Anchor Formula?

Is there a "near perfect" anchor breakdown that any guru's can chime in about when building links?
Example: 20 % Main Keyword, 40 % Long tail Keywords, 40 % Branded Domain anchors?
I find a lot of SEO providers using 100 % main keyword anchor text on most of their link building without using any domain anchors, is this a bad idea?

There's no "perfect" formula when it comes to anything related to SEO. I've read that somewhere between 50:50 main keyword:generic keywords seems reasonable. I agree that using 100% main anchor is definitely a bad idea.

100% main anchor is definitely a really bad idea. I like to keep my Partial, exact match under 10%. The rest is brand, url and generic anchors.

Some niches require a much higher % for the main exact anchors. I've gone as high as 90% before in order to rank. It depends on the niche you're in.

All these people saying "anything more than 50% for your main KW is wrong bla bla" have obviously never been in some of the tougher niches where the ONLY way you'll rank is by going aggressive with your ratios.

yes, using 100% for main anchor is really bad idea, it's looks unnatural to the eyes of Big G.

Main anchor - 10% and Generic anchor text - 10%
Branded - 40% and partial match - 40%

This ratio will helps to identify the keyword diversity.

I find what you are saying interesting, are you saying the more competitive the niche you should raise your exact match anchor %?

Just like leith said. Most of the times I go with 20% main keyword, but I managed to rank more than 50% main keyword as well. Really depends. You can always start low, then start adding up and see where it gets you then just adjust when you see movement.
