when people click my IG profile link, how does it show on google analytics?
is it 'direct'? or 'instagram.com/referal?'
for 4 months now, i only get 1 of the latter. but why would it be 'direct?'

It will be 'direct', because essentially the app opens the link directly in your browser.
You could use google analytics to create a campaign link which should give you and indication of how many people are coming from instagram, or use a link shortener but most don't recommend because instagram have a habit of banning accounts using these.

I was unaware that instagram was blocking accounts that used a tracking url? Otherwise I would totally agree, go to urlbuilder, set your source/medium and ad a campaign name. You'll get a butt ugly URL, so you'll have to us bitly or some other url shortener.

Well I know they've been bulk deleting accounts when they all use the same link, but I'm just extra careful I guess.

Rotate links w/ bitly. I was doing that for a while on Twitter and they never seemed to catch on. They might be able to see through them now though - not sure?
