Tools like Algoroo & Mozcast measure the turbulence in the SERPS. Turbulence means a lot of movement between were a site is ranking.

Google updates most days, they tend to make announcements when they are rolling out the major changes.
Just checking SERPS should be an indicator, if I have been working on a specific site I'd expect to see some movement, but when all the sites seem to move at once, then something is happening at the Big G.
