I have several extensions with full rights, with 60k+ users, increasing, most from US, spending an average of 12 minutes daily. Great feedback. Surprisingly, monetisation is THE hardest part.
- affiliates - no - i've been banned several times
- google adsense - is not possible (yet)
- donation - this is a joke
- advertising - if you are too aggressive, you will be reported and your google account banned - that's a sudden death. If you give your advertising rights to a third party, most probably they will ask you to kindly inserd a small js code in your add, that most probably it will kill you in the next 2 weeks.

Me personally I am still looking for a long term solution.

There are companies on the market which specialize on addon monetization. What they do is providing you JS code, which you implemenn in your extension, and once done it starts generating $ for you. Of course there are tricks you should know while working with different browsers and there are differences for running monetizing solutions in Chrome and Mozilla for example. You're right about ads injecting monetization. this is a high risk way, nobody wants to be banned and dropped from the Store.
