What's the difference on registering a domain between the various sites?

First sorry i can't find a "questions area" of the forum.

I would like to know what's the difference on registering, for example, a domain with namecheap/whatever and a domain with godaddy/whatever.
I know prices are different, but what's the reason?
Like for hosting are the various features etc., but with domains?

The basic functionality and services are the same across most registrars, same is true for Godaddy and Namecheap. I personally find Namecheap to have a better support team compared to Godaddy. While Godaddy has a compact and easy to understand dashboard. I have seen many people complaint how Godaddy rubs a lot of upsells during checkout. Hit the skip button, you guys.

Some registrars provide free whois protection, some are more user friendly, price can also varie a bit. Usually I go for the price who at the moment provides cheaper domains (sales, coupons etc..) or if I need whos protection, I go for those who offer free whois protection for the usual price of domain.

Registration and other features are same for all websites that provide domain names but there is a difference between their services as at expensive domain sites you'll find more protection and their offers will more convenient and legit as compare to cheap ones.

Pretty much all the registrars are very similar in their services and range of products. The difference is mostly in quality of support and/or special offers. Remember one thing, there is a governing body above all the registrars that offer gTLDs and ngTLDs (not to be mistaken with ccTLDs), the registrars MUST follow ICANN RAA and policies or else they stop being a registrar If you have any problems with your registrar then check if the problem violates ICANN RAA or Policy and if it does, go to ICANN website and use their complain form, ICANN must review your complain and requests your registrar to look into it within limited time. As an ex-insider of a registrar, I can assure you that any request from ICANN is a lot of 'fun'.

Avoid Godaddy. And Moniker. The worst is 1&1.

Namecheap was okay but their new user interface is just a nightmare.

Look at Namesilo, Internetbs, Dynadot.

If you need quality - Gandi.

I've bought plenty of domains through godaddy before, never hosted with them, just change nameservers to your hosts and your good to go!

Godaddy is very strict and has many issues. Namecheap is much more simple to use.

The only thing Godaddy has that makes them popular is the amount of advertising they do, and they charge way more then most to keep up their advertising dollars, they charge about double on everything, that's how they can afford the coupons, you always see from them. If you look around, you'll find that their coupons, are what other registrars charge normal. Most people don't take the time to look, or know where to look.

Hehehe that made me chuckle.

Th difference is 0 actually. With all providers you'll get a domain. Period. If you are capable of setting up your own DNS settings and stuff just get the cheapest provider. That's just the registering bit though - hosting is a completely different ball-game!

Domain registration is same irrespective of the registrar. The difference in price might depend on the service they provide and also the reputation of the registrar.
