How hard to rank nr.1 for this?

I'm going to try to rank nr.1 for a few long tail keywords in this niche.
There is already an authority website which is ranking number 1 for many of these keywords but, for one keyword it doesn't even have the long tail keyword in the title, url, description tag, or in the head. (Market Samurai)

But the website has a 100 000 backlinks.

This long tail keyword gets 30 thousand searches a month (adwords keyword tool) or 2,000 searches (market samurai)
So probably somewhere in between.

But what I'm saying is that there is no website optimized for that long tail keyword, just similar keywords.
So I could make a site just for that keyword and maybe dominate it.

There are no web 2.0 properties ranking there, just websites.

So how hard would it be to rank nr.1 for that keyword if I would bulid a simple website witht the full long tail keyword everywhere?

There are a lot of these keywords, I simply want to attack one keyword at a time with a website just for that keyword.

Since the main websites in that niche are only built to rank highly for the main keyword.

This is probably you're best bet for ranking, keyword sniping. I do this on numerous websites and it works. Just don't be too upset when the authority site puts up one page covering the keyword and bam, you're having to build links out the wazzo to compete with them. But that's the chance you take and you always take that chance.

All right thanks, I'm just a little confused of how many searches/month I can go for.
I mean seriously, if I can quickly rank for something that gets 5-10 thousand searches a month then you could make a lot with a $20+ cpa offer that fits perfectly with the keyword.

do a google search for "google external" then type in your keywords, select "exact match"
#1 gets about 40% of the search, #2, 20%, #3, 10% and it drops quickly from there #10 first page only gets about 2% of the search and the REST of the pages may get 5% combined.

You'll also get a few long tail keywords but not something that adds up to much.

However, the #1 spot might get more than 40% if its the only one that is very related to the keyword.

I just found these handy rules on some blog that I could start with
* There are 200+ searches per day for said keyword.
* There are less than 1,000,000 competing pages. (in quotes)
* There is some level of value to an advertiser.

This is what I'm going to use to start off.
