Hiding DNS servers for PBN

I'm 99% sure that Google doesn't perform whois lookups. Instead, I believe that they find your DNS servers by querying your IP address that your website is hosted on which then reveals your DNS servers.

For this reason people recommend that you use different hosting providers with different IPs for you private blog networks. A great trick for the big dogs with big wallets but expensive for Tiny Tim and his little PBN. So what if there was a way to hid your DNS servers? Well I believe there is.

While you can not prevent the big G from finding your DNS, you can make sure that your DNS doesn't reveal your the same person behind everyone of those payday loan blogs (just and example).

The solution = Cloudflare (or a similar service)

Why?

Google will crawl the website that THEY host which uses their DNS's.

"Wait, so you want me to use their DNS's? So I have all of my PBNs pointing at my money site and they are ALL CloudFlare sites?" I hear you cry. Someone at the back shouts "wake up and smell the footprint!".

But wait. There are nearly 2 million and counting other sites using the same DNS too. Security by obscurity. Personally I still use a mix for that extra reassurance but that's just me. I'd love to hear what the PBN experts out there think....

I use Cloudflare and love the service, however think about what Google sees all across other backlink profiles .. It will look something like this http://trends.builtwith.com/ns where 30% of the backlinking domains are probably on Godaddy, and only 0.32% are on Cloudflare.

Now if I were a Googlebot which stumbled onto your website where 90% of your links came from Cloudflare hosted sites it would look 'unnatural' compared to normal sites.

Agreed, you'll trade one risk for another.

There is risk in either case but I guess sometimes going for a less damaging risk would be a better option.

Tiny Tim needn't be priced out of the PBN market because of hosting - you can pick up decent enough plans for as less than $10 per year. If this is too much then I question what he is doing with his PBN!

I think there is a misconception with the cost of setting up different hosts for your PBN's. I limit 1-3 PBN sites per host, and on average I pay $1-2 per month for the hosting.

The biggest expense is the domains, it's not the hosting. There are plenty of very cheap hosting providers out there.

Don't forget though that CF and other CDN's are gaining in popularity. If you look at the CF data you'll see that they're on track to almost double their customer base this year, and with that type of momentum, the more they grow, the more they will grow. So, to have a few dozen links from from CF routed hosting isn't a big deal in my opinion, particularly if the total number of backlinks that your site has is a 'statistically meaningless' number, like, <50.

If, however, you had 100k backlinks, and 90k of them came from CF routed hosts, that would perhaps be meaningful. But Tiny Tim isn't in that situation, so I don't think it's going to matter.
