This is correct. You cannot unfollow private users
So what can I do about it?

do you have log who you followed before? if you do have log on FL you could unfollow all
I do not have .. What am I supposed to do?

Instagram cancells all the unaccepted requests after few weeks. Wait untill then

i don't think so, unless you're talking about SEVERAL weeks (more than 10). I haven an account that stop following people and even two months later there's still people who accept my following request.

You need to manual checking all of users you follow, but if you not save the list, just pray instagram will remove unaccept request...

Yes I have faced the same problem in the fast. For me it took me a long time before I was able to follow all 7.5k again

it takes 1 month to go back to normal if you don't touch the limit again that you have now but now you have to unfollow to follow again and the limit that you have now will come back if you retouch 7500 again in the future also so its basically instagram telling you to learn when to stop by force.
