China has once again blocked a popular social networking web site, this time Twitter is on the latest block. China has been known in the recent past to block web sites like YouTube and even blocking Apple's iTunes and Amazon. The strict and demanding country contains the world's largest population of Internet users and communities. China has blocked more than 6,000 web sites and blogs that China feels could spread negative word about itself, sparking protests. Bing.com, Live.com, hotmail.com, Blogger and now Flickr is another web site that has recently been blocked by China, preventing any access or sharing of photos from its people.

What's wrong with this people? Are they closing there door the internet world?lol

Understand this:

To control people, force is not enough in the long run
To control people you need ideology
To enforce ideology you MUST control information.

Information control = pwnage.

In Democrasy, information must flow unlimited.

As long as China is "king of the world", they can pretty much do what they want.

Agree with jagged lol
ala China is the most important country in the world, they can do whatever they like k

Wow, that is completely ridiculous. They do it to prevent people from spreading negative information about their country, but wouldn't the bans themselves be a massive warning sign to everyone that there is something wrong with their gov?

Dude, everyone knows that it is "wrong" but nobody is in a position to force them to do anything. They are the bank and manufacturer for most other countries so if they get pissed and turn the tap off, your country is screwed...which is why you never see a major leader slamming them.

Several countries are actually blocking websites, so I guess there's a lot of things wrong with a lot of countries then.

You can put any country in China's place in this thread and the reasons don't change much when it comes to international influence on a domestic problem. If the country that is censoring for political and or religious reasons and they are a big trade partner with the rest of the world, little will be done. as they have no leverage. The issue with China is that about 20% of the world's population is there....that puts them in the spotlight more.

Chinese government is underestimating the power and knowledge of their youth. These kids know a lot better on how to get around the ban or any ban for that matter. Once, in the US there was prohibition but people found a way to work around it. The more any country censor anything the better the business.

its really nothing a vpn couldnt fix. trust me i know ^^ lol
these mass bannings are not really regulated that well.
even dubai (the richest place in the world) has blocked out all adult content.
and sadly, my country, bahrain (neighbor of dubai/very similar place) has followed them and as of 09 banned all adult content too :(
luckily i go to uni in the US :p
edit: it doesnt matter what other country's think of china.... it only matters what the citizens of china think of china.
therefore, control all info.

hi i'm from china, china blocks several sites cause this is a "sensitive" period these days, if u guys are interested u can search term "6-4 movement beijing".

actually,as far as i know, a lot of people have complaints about chinese gov for many aspects...

chinese hav pretty much everything of their own, their own social network site, internet messenger (QQ) , search engine (baidu.com) etc

what's the point having internet there? they just need chinanet then.

ummm.... hey everybody.... if u all are not aware... its not just china... its loads of other countries...!

even US is trying to do this...!! google "internet neutrality" if u are unaware of the whole issue...!

most of the muslim countries like UAE, quatar are doing this too!

Its not the same as net neutrality issues in the US. No one on either side of net neutrality is suggesting we completely ban websites like twitter or youtube...

not just prevent people from spreading negative issues about the country over the net, they do it offline as well. This is nothing new. And as a Chinese I'm pretty ashamed of this practice...its been like this as far as i can remember

well thats the next best thing to a complete ban... make them so slow that nobody can wait...

will u wait for a website to open for like 2 min howsoever much u may like it...? u will also get network time outs in the mean time too... coz its taking too long to load!

if something is very hard to access it dies a slow death!

China can only last so long with these filters IMHO... I mean with things like satellite internet, etc. Not to mention great inventions like proxies, tor, etc. I think nearly anyone in china can get around the filters if they want.

Also... China's leadership is getting old. They can't last forever and I highly doubt their tech savy youth will maintain their for fathers policies.

We are becoming a global economy and I really just don't see how china can survive if it keeps cutting of it's business outlets.

guys, if we keep talking about china here, soon blackhatworld.com will be blocked as well :P
