Curse of Page 2

Hey all, in search of some advice today.

I'll give a little background on my sites. I've always been a fan of 'slow and steady'. I have quite a few sites now on the second page of google and are making me a trickle of affiliate commissions (amazon) but the keywords are getting between 1,000 and 2,900 searches and I can't help but feel that getting to page one would be huge for me.

The link profiles have some comments, web 2.0s, audio sharing sites and more recently PBNs and some links I've purchased from here. I seem to be stuck between 11-14 in the serps for a few different sites. If I could get them all to the top 10 I think it could be life changing (I'm a 9-5er), so if anyone has suggestions of how they break this barrier, it'd be much appreciated! Keep going with PBN links? Should I build social signals (if so, how?)

Some of the sites are now two years old, does this mean I can afford to be more aggressive with the link building?

Yes, since the metrics you provided are great.

1. The website are old,
2. If you have great and well arranged articles, you can build more powerful links to the websites.

One thing i will seriously point out here, is the anchor text you'll be using in building the backlinks. I learn from experience about using the same categories of anchor text, my website was ranking first page 2nd position, but it was hit seriously.

So try using several achor text

I diversify as much as possible between generic, naked urls, branded anchor text, partial match and VERY occasionally exact match for the keywords.

I have between 40-60 articles on the sites and the homepages have around 2000 words (do people usually use more than this? I've heard of people putting 3,500 words on the homepage, is that likely to help me?)

Since you're selling amazon stuff here's a simple suggestion:

1. Buy some of the stuff you're peddling from Amazon
2. Reach out to an established blogger in your niche
3. Ask them do they sell reviews on their blog (this will get their attention)
4. Most will say yes and quote a price. ignore the price they quote
5. instead tell them you're not good at writing reviews yourself, and would like to hold a blog giveaway instead
6. tell them that you propose to hold the competition on their blog
7. Tell them the benefits: links to their blog, comments, social shares, something to give their readers, etc, etc.
8. no 7 is not a hard sell. Trust me. Most bloggers are broke
9. use the stuff from amazon as the prize

Giveaway format:

1. To enter, bloggers must create a post with 150 words about the topic and link back to the host's blog
2. Participants will also need to follow/like yours and the host's FB/Twitter/ etc whatever other stuff you want them to do. Keep it less than 4 requirements
3. Since it's a giveaway, you can just use random.org to choose the winner.
4. Set it up to run for 2 weeks. 3 weeks tops

What this does:

1. Legit blogs are linking to a legit page on a strong domain that links back to your page/hompage. White hat tiered linking anyone?
2. You get to expose your website to the host's readership. Hopefully you picked a relevant blog.

If you execute this well, i think you'll get to page 1 easily. Make sure the host's page links back to the your post that's stuck on page 2, and not your homepage.

Rinse and repeat with different domains to host your giveaway to buff up your ref domains metric, until you rank for the term.

Why is this worth it?
Well, you're on page 2 already aren't you? That should justify the investment in time and money.

^ above sounds like a good + safe plan. Alternatively more pbn links and basically scaling up what you are doing already.

My advice would be to make sure you don't blow it by getting impatient. I've done it a couple times and it doesn't feel good. Make sure everything you're doing is something that would naturally occur if your site was popular enough to get those links etc. without fabricating or paying for them. Don't push to hard because you want page 1 now, just look at backlink profiles of your competitors and find some places you can get links from that you don't have yet. Slow and steady wins the race if you want long term profit.

Thanks. I've done a lot of research on other peoples sites who are ranking above me and their links are spammy in some cases which makes me wonder if I haven't gone 'black hat' enough.

Page 1 is easy, getting to the top 3 is hard

Keep pushing as you have been so far. You'll get there eventually.

Be patient and continue with your link building style while maintaining diverse anchors. Use your target anchors around 5% of the time.
