You have to do what feels right for you at the time. I left half way through 6th form (pre-college) because I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to learn at that time.

If I knew what I know now I would definitely have gone all the way - college and uni but at the time it just wasn't right.

I did a Bachelor's degree and graduated yesterday. I did IM, studied and worked for 4 years. It was well worth the effort.

Grats. I freelanced and worked some full time gigs through college. It felt so good when I finally graduated.

Julien looks like a typical con artist hipster. Just because he is taking a train or driving around europe doesn't mean he is banking hard as he appears to be. Its only about $60 to go from warsaw to berlin on a train. Being able to travel around Europe isn't that special as what some people claim or think.

If you study literature, music etc it's a waste of time.
Although if you do science, and at the same time do IM. Well then you got something really nice

You've never seen tiered payscales? Srsly? In CS related jobs, you will make more and opportunities open with the big boys.

In no CS job I've personally work at or known well of did the credentials determine the payscale. None. Yet you consider it as usual in the field as rain during the fall. In a non-CS job I worked many years ago, indeed I was paid an extra amount because of the degrees.

Especially in CS, which is a "holy shit, not only great devs are expensive as hell, we even have trouble finding an unoccupied one to negotiate with" industry at the moment, degrees don't hamper your income. Sure, some behemoth of a company may do, but it's "neeeext" and that's that.

nteresting topic, i'll share with you my point of view, but don't take it to seriously i'm just newbie here, i don't even earn 1k month yet, but i should be there in few months.

If you live in europe like i do, in many states college is for free, i think you should atleast try it to make it work.
College is good for in my opinion:
-as someone allready mention here, people will take you more seriously
-If you choose your major wisely it could help you in long term (when you want to ivest or start some bussines outside IM) majors like business,economic or advertising
-having a degree is kind of good back up plan, if IM dies or i should say that your method dies and you on't be ble to adapt...
-and one of the big reasons for me to have a degree is that once i will have kids, so lets say that they will be my age in 30 to 40 years from now and they might not hve opportunities like we do and they might havo to have a college degree and i don't want to be that dad, who says i don't have it, but you have to!
And in my case right now, i never worked this much.. i'm way more efficient, since i have to be in class at certain time i don't have time to screw arround.I wake up 5am workout, try to do bit of work before school, go to school,work between classes.. then come home.. work after that i make my dinner and meal prep for next day and sleep 3-6 hours and again. I work a lot because i don't know if that day on certain class i will receive some work from them, so i try to do as much as possible if i have to work later on something school related.. (if you read my journey it doesn't seem like i work this much, but that is because i'm working on my flat lately i have to do it before winter starts...

cons:
-waste of time in school and extra work to school
-i don't think so it will help you with your IM journey
-extra stress, less sleep
-and i don't even want to start about colleges that you have to pay for

All colleges you have to pay for, either by paying as you go/Loan post pay. Or in the cases of European nations that offer free education you pay more in taxes.

Good point about the taxes, i don't know how much they are in US or matter of fact i don't know the rates in any other country, but out here we got 15% and legal entities have 19% + as a student i save on taxes and on insurance... So yes all the money and more that i can save via being a student i can earn in IM, but hey after 5 years i might have a degree..

I'll throw in my unwanted 2 cents. College is of course a hugely personal decision dependent upon many, many different factors. Personally, I decided college was a colossal waste of time. I took a couple classes and tried to mingle with the other students, and was so underwhelmed and disappointed by it all I dropped out.

Everything I was being taught and saw I was going to be taught, I could (usually) teach myself faster without spending all the money. I couldn't convince myself I wanted to spend dozens of hours sitting in a history class (even though I like exploring history!) when my true passions lay elsewhere.

Almost as bad are the children you're forced to associate with. I'm not some prudish stuck up old fogie per say and I love a good party and knocking back some beers. But that's not my whole life, nor do I want it to be. I have zero patience for shallow, shortsighted, less than grateful children who live to smoke pot and get black out drunk most weeknights. Obviously this isn't the entire student body acting like this, but it was a large enough part that I wanted nothing to do with them. I aint about dat lyfe.

If you truly enjoy college and learning, or need that degree to pursue a career you have a great passion for, you can most certainly make it work. If you're going to college just to make a lot of money or get a job, reevaluate yourself and what you're doing. Most likely there's a much less expensive and time consuming way to do that. I got brainwashed by high school teachers, counselors, and media outlets telling me I NEEDED a degree to do anything with my life. I'm just glad I realized it wasn't right for me before I ended up with 50+ grand in debt.

In the USA you need a business degree to go into most management positions if you don't have the experience or impressive skills necessary. I say learn to sell first, then do what you want (uni for a degree or IM). I have no degree in 3D or 2D animation yet I'm earning more money than most grads are. Yes, some companies laughed at me not having a degree or being a wild card, but I laugh at them now. I don't need to slave away for my money from this field, I make money whether I want to animate and produce that day or not. I spent 5 years learning, 1 whole year just simply practicing and my skills are refined and sharp. I know how to sell my services now, which gives me a steady line of clients lined up, unlimited references in exchange for a few favors per channel or site.

I do a lot of other stuff on the side, but really I still want to get my phd in psychology. I want that title to throw in the faces of all those who refuse or ignore my advice in my life. I want it to not make money wit but as a testimony that I wasted years and money relearning what I learned from Google searches for books and companies. I am 100% positive that if you do go for a degree, go for the money as well online. Work a job to not only pay off your debts, but to help you invest online. If that means you need to go to school in order to gain a position, then by all means go to school. That way when you are paying back your debts, you can also invest and help secure another income source to play around with.

Business school is a fucking joke, so is the psychology school. Yes the degrees will help you out immensely but other than a trophy you get nothing in return. You would have to go out and convince businesses to hire you, you don't get handed jobs on a silver platter without word of mouth. Very few people impress others that much to gain word of mouth, but if you knew how to start people talking about you and built references, you can land some really hard to reach jobs. Those would then pay for your debts and side investments.

As for me, I still hope that one day my kids will realize that they have a well of information on access from their fingertips.

Business school is not a joke besides MBA without being paired without anything good, the other business degrees such as accounting or Banking among some others are good degrees. A MBA is when you have one degree and looking to get into management, like if you had a IT degree did some years in the IT field and now looking to go into senior management.
