Does Website default language affect on SEO

Hi guys. I need your help.

I am doing SEO on one Canadian website since November 2014. I am doing till now only english language, but french one is also optimized.
Link building goes English language only.

Before the default language was www.mywebsite.ca/en
Now client wanted to change it into www.mywebsite.ca/fr

Rankings are down now, but now much just it doesn't go the way was before.

I think it can be because of the default language. What do you think?

Did you such kind of experience? If yes please let me know if its not the issue seems another problem is here.

Since all links point to the /en url, you should redirect it to the /fr url if you want to regain the rankings you lost. After that's done, change the url of the english version to something else.
