I just launched a site that is ranking well for 33 low traffic terms already in under a month. Brand new domain, 33 pages of well written content, minimal targeted back linking, and a dash of social media sharing. In essence very "whitehat".
The longer 12-24 month wait is usually for higher comp keywords or #1 positions that need a lot of work.

I won't wait 12 month for a ranking that is not practical.

Total bullshit. I have brand new domains ranking for big keywords in under 4 months. With aged domains you can go even faster. Stick to blackhat and you can rank quicker.

Again - it all depends on the competition.
As I mentioned last week you can rank in 20 minutes for a low/zero competition keyword.
Since Google Caffeine a few years back indexing and ranking have been both quick and done at almost the same time.
I used the "Cokfudge" (must be exact match) example on my old WoW website. Ranked in less than 20 minutes.
Want to rank page 1 for "Ipad for Sale"? - then 2 years and a 6 figure budget might be optimistic.
In every case the variable is competition.
No one can even guess what time it will take to rank if you haven't assessed your keyphrase competition.
We don't work in a vacuum.
The internet is live. hundreds of thousands of other webmasters are actively adding content, building links, engaging n social media. If you pick a niche where a lot of effort is being put in my other webmasters - then you are going to have to do more - and better than them. Notwithstanding - they have had a head start.
Don't mean to be rude but if the concept of competition being the single (and by far) biggest factor in the length of time it takes to rank for any keyword or phrase - you can't have thought about it.

Agreed.
I've targeted some keywords that have taken me several months to rank for and I've targeted other, mostly low competition keywords that have taken me only a week to rank for. It depends on your SEO efforts, your website's authority, the type of keyword, and the keyword's competition level in the SERPs.

Massively depends on the competition of the niche. I've seen some sites rank in a week and others over a year.
