Got a nasty virus and now I need help

I usually don't ask for help when it comes to computer problems however this time I am helpless.

So I got this nasty virus called Mystartsearch which has set mystartsearch.com as homepage in Firefox and IE too, and no matter what I do I cannot get rid of it, every time I open the browser I get mystartsearch.com.

I tried many things, removed registries, reset browser, uninstall extensions, full scan with Avast and Malwarebytes, nothing works.

If anyone has an idea or has encountered this problem before I would appreciate the help.

Have you tried looking through running processes one by one and seeing if any of them look suspicious? You wouldn't happen to have a restore point set up on your OS that you could just roll back to?

No suspicious process running. Unfortunately I have disabled system restore.

No. Not sure if that will make a difference but I'll try.

Start your PC in safe mode, run Hitman Pro and Malwarebytes. Delete the extensions/homepage and search engine in your Internet settings (chrome, firefox and internet explorer) than check the date when this occured and see if you've downloaded/changed anything that day. Un-install it and let your PC run a full system scan. Go to start --> msconfig --> check for programs that starts when you run Windows.. Disable those who are harmful (not sure? Google!) All those things combined should disable the virus from starting with windows, removing it and make sure it doesn't come back. (like the extensions etc).

I hope it'll work for you as it worked for me, since it's a pretty stubborn virus/malware to remove..

Use a good Adware Cleaner tool. Search google for "Adware Cleaner" and it should give you best results. I used to have a similar virus in my chrome and i cleared it using adware cleaner..

and trojans that other applications don't find. There is a free 30-day trial.

Use Kaspersky Rescue CD to scan the computer outside of Windows control.

no guarantee, try it and you will see, i remember it helped me once when the regular scan couldn't, i guess the option to perform a safe mode scan is there for a reason

Actually I tried it as you suggested in safe mode right before Hitman Pro and it didn't find anything. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Try getting Norton 360. It's never ever disappointed me.

The fix is easy if the problem is not going away even after running scans.
JUST Right click on the browser(any browser) icon choose Properties.
Choose Shortcut and Check the target: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
The target should be just the above line for the respective browsers if anything extra is written in there just remove it and then apply the changes.

Next change the homepage and you are good to go.

I once got a similar virus on my pc. I found that even after cleaning everything there were some plugins that would just pop back in there everytime the pc was restarted or even if you closed all the way out of the browser and reopened it. I got it to stop by going into these folders and deleting the Google/Mozilla folders. Something was in there that was causing the apps/plugins to auto download.

Closing as resolved. Have to say though, when I saw the title, I thought it was a virus as in the common cold!
