How to Rank - A Quick Guide for Newbies

My journey thread was about ranking multiple authority sites to get passive income with no additional work. The goal of that journey changed because I did make enough money after ranking several of the terms, and shifted the journey to rank every KW on the site in a big niche. Which I posted in that thread that money was no longer the focus and ranking everything was, because the goal of $100 a day was hit. The journey changed to a challenge to rank more KWs. As stated in the thread I had other previous sites which were ranked as well for an online business.

I am not getting personal with attacks here. Or insinuating you 'can't rank'. I think it is a tad comical, albeit frustrating.

The point is to help newbies rather than tell people to buy / create PBN links. You can disagree with this or assume I do things this way.

I am also not stating this is the best way to rank, or you cannot rank with less or more. I am also not saying I build blog comments to all of my posts / sites / pages. That would be a waste of time. On some pages, when applicable in my niche, I will build them.

This is not how I rank every site or any site. This is a step by step guide to point newbies in the right direction and avoid common pitfalls. Yes, you are right, their are more efficacious ways to rank. Yes, I personally use my PBN and a public PBN, Pumper Web 2.0s, and the occasional other link building methods to rank which includes Pumper Profiles and 301s to rank.

I do appreciate you chiming in to help newbies. I appreciate the discourse.

I could tell people exactly how to rank with a minimum of startups funds, but I don't want more competitors.

That's just not how the world works. Unlike most here, I have no hidden agenda, nothing to sell. I'll just tell it like it is. What benefit is there to me in creating 10's of thousand of competitors?

If I gave away my hard earned secrets to 1000's of lazy newbies who just want riches hand to them on a plate and I ended up homeless, I bet not a single one of them would ever help me. They'd drive past me in their sports car and never give it a second thought.

So, no, I won't be writing an easy to follow anything for newbies. Pointers in the right direction are what people get. The rest is up to them.

It wasn't meant as a personal attack. That's why I did say "when you're making 5-6 figures a month". That's my way of saying if you aren't already making money, you certainly will be at some point.

If you *are* already making big money then great. I hope you are doing well.


While your post is still helpful, if I was a newbie I would be thinking "holy shit, that's a lot of complex work and if the least thing goes wrong I get penalized". It makes it seem SO much more complicated than it is.

My input is to say to people "It's not that complicated. Don't over-think. Just focus on building a little network of relevant sites, be it a PBN or web 2's you build up" No need to diversify, no need to worry about looking natural. Just don't go overboard or go to extremes.

Keep it simple. Simple works. Simple, but powerful.

I do need to worry when I give out my secrets. I've been in affiliate marketing for a loooong time. I know EXACTLY what happens when people spill their guts. Things that were making $10k/day can suddenly die out and barely make $100/day.

Settle on my comfort zones without upgrading? What, lol. How is sharing all my money making secrets "upgrading"? Only a fool would come on here and share everything. Upgrading involves hiring staff and expanding operations. Not sharing my secrets on a forum in the hope that someone might someday do something nice in return for me. This is the real world. Doing "good" for the sake of doing good, and in the hope you get something in return won't lead to anything prosperous.

Want to rank on google? Just create contextual do-follow brand links from articles targeted to the keywords you want to rank for.

How many times have you seen this work now - what percentage of time does it work for you? This is exactly what I did pre-prenguin and it worked great. I had sites ranking with just blog posts from ALN, BMR, etc...think that could work now? if it does it's not gonna last long.

Backlinks is King, but not everything. We've all seen sites with crappy or very few backlinks rank above sites with tons of great powerful links.

I don't "see" things work. I rank sites.

It works 100% of the time.

And you're talking about blog posts on PUBLIC blog networks, more than likely with exact match anchors.

I only use brand, url, page title and a little lsi anchors. Never exact. There's no point, it's just not needed and it's safer to stick to branding. You can be more aggressive with brand links.

And I don't use public networks. I have my own high CF/TF network of sites that I exclusively control.

Backlinks is King, but not everything. We've all seen sites with crappy or very few backlinks rank above sites with tons of great powerful links.

Really? I don't see this often, if ever.

The exceptions are:

1) An EMD. Emds still fucking rock if you know how to use them properly without getting penalized.

2) Hidden PBN. You just *think* the site has crappy links. It's probably got a hidden pbn.

3) The site with the strong backlinks isn't well optimized for the keyword.

Other than that it's extremely rare. It's not something I see in the niches I look at, and I look at a LOT of niches.

What you'll see more, and you'll see a lot of posts on this forum to this effect too, is people asking "Why is X not penalized, he's blatantly spamming".

That's a good guide and should help a lot of people out. I have a question though, in your guide you have "Relatively Easy: Top ten are all Optimized for the KW but no authority sites." "Authority" might be skewed here as the sites ranking might not show high stats on third party tools and not have big brands but if they have hidden PBN links then they will be actually a lot harder to outrank. I see that all the time in PPD niches, domains that aren't "authority" and don't have powerful stats but they use hidden PBN links and are actually very hard to outrank.

Do your private networks have links from authority sites in the similar industry as your money site? Or you just focus on high TF domains with certain number of referring domains?

No, you don't need relevant links. Just good strong links. What matters is the content you put on your PBN. That determines the relevancy of the link to your own site.

If you could only choose domains with links from sites in your industry you would struggle to build a PBN. Especially since I build sites for small niches on Amazon.

No, you don't need relevant links. Just good strong links. What matters is the content you put on your PBN. That determines the relevancy of the link to your own site.

For my home set up I let GSA scrape targets for me. It tends to avoid footprints rather than using the same list 100 other people are using. When using it to build tier one links, you must avoid footprints.

For search engine settings in SER, do you use only Google, all Google (all countries) or English based search engines?

I am sitting back and letting Splish Splash answer questions and enjoying his input as it is correct and great. I had hoped other experienced SEOs would chime and and he is giving gems out.

The question directed specifically at me, the answer to engines to use:

I use a handful of Google engines and Bing. I let the program do its job and after a while I may add an engine if I need more links. Generally I start with english speaking google engines to find the most targets possible.

If you have found a few expired domains with a few strong links (I assume these links are authority site links eg usatoday.com) BUT with low TF (less than 10), would you still consider buying them? What would be your judgment call when looking at the number of strong links an expired domain has?

It would be pretty rare for a domain to actually have a TF under 10 if it had a link from a site like usatoday.

My first filter is TF over 15. Next is checking anchor text. That's a very strong indicator of what went on with the site. If it's brand/url it's probably safe. If looks like 8% 8% 8% 8% 8% even spreads then I just leave it.
If anchor looks safe I then look at backlinks. I just make sure they're real, and this is the one time I'll use 'natural', because I as a human with a brain can determine what's natural even though I couldn't define what it is that's natural.

I also avoid domains that only have 1-2 really strong links. I'd prefer 10+ slightly strong, or 25+ medium. If there's only 2 super strong links then when they get removed your domain is useless. If you have 25 medium, if 2-3 links get removed your domain is still good.

If I may ask one more question: what do you use to share the url shortner that points directly at money site?

I tried putting it in addmefast and it says they can't share url shortners on fb (although it can tweet them)

Figured you might know of a good tool / platform to use.

I share them manually on my sites social media accounts, and do not do automation for the sharing. I just do it normally like I were a regular webmaster trying to shorten my URL. I take my SEO hat off and put on my 'White Hat' - hat, and share.
