SEO question - Moving content from an existing website to new website

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I have a website which is doing nothing at all and would like to use the content which I have in there to start another website.
Not being all that good at all things Google, I am not sure how to do it without creating a "duplicate content" scenario.
What I mean is, I need to somehow "de-register" the content which is present on one website before I can publish it on the new website.

Any ideas how to do it and how long I need to wait or how do I find out when it is safe to re-use it on another website ie. how to make sure that Google has stopped associating that particular copy with the first website where it originated from, thus eliminating the danger of Google seeing the content as "duplicate"?

Not quite sure whether I explained it properly, hope you understand what my concern is, any suggestions are very much appreciated

To be perfectly honest I am not 100% sure whether there was any penalty involved or not, I just want to get rid of that site because a) domain sucks and b) I could do with adding some of the narrative from that website to a new one. That old one is doing nothing and essentially, it is a waste of time..

there is only one page(home page) involved so really, there is not that much content to be moved.. By the way, what is the difference between moving 3 pages or 300? I mean from the Google's point of view?

My experiences vary, but I found that sometimes when you just remove a domain, google holds onto the content. I would remove the text from the old site, then put it onto the new one and put new text (!) on the old site. Something like "This is gone now" to indicate "this has changed please update" not "this may have been lost"

300 pages moves: Google's point of view is "more chances of screwing up the redirects".

Just go for google webmaster tools and use it to remove all old indexed links and thus you will be able to get all your indexed content removed from google's index.(this works only for google and bong search engines not for all the others out there )
However if you want to be on the safest side possible, simply reword/re-write the content from your old website and then use it in your new website and make sure that it is not a mirror image of the old one and the text is atleast 75% unique.

Thanks very much for your input guys! Still not quite sure whether there is a sure-bet system for doing this.

Thank you nersande, not a bad idea but I think the best thing would be to first delete the content from the old domain, then insert the new content instead, wait until it has been indexed and only then try to publish the old content to a new domain. That way you are reducing the chance of getting "duplicated", at least that's how I understand these things

Thank you for the link Ranksonic, I think Google just provides instructions for the scenario whereby you move you old site's content to a new domain.

Thanks for the advice sunny clicks. Not my favourite method but luckily there is not much content. This would definitely not work for a large(ish) website..

Rewording/Rewriting is the safest way, just see its not a mirror image as rightly brought out above.
