How to get back domain from a previous web designer?

Hi guys, I wanted to know how do you get back your domain name (its a business domain name) back from a previous web designer as they are not willing to transfer it nor point it to my name server? Is there a way to get the domain to my hosting ? I do not know what registrar they used.

What if the business name is registered locally with the same name as domain? Just the difference of the word 'Limited' Not in the domain name?

First of all make sure if you bought that or they bought that. You say, you don't know the registrar, then I will say, find it.
Later see for how much time it is booked. You can place a backorder.
I am not that sure but I have seen my friends placing backorders to get a purchased domain when it expires

It's going to be hard unless it's a trademarked name. Even then you might have to fight them legally since they do not want to coorperate with you. If you paid for the website domain with the design things can be complicated especially if the registration was for a year and you are no longer working with them.

If the domain has your registered business name in it: This could be classified as domain squatting with the intent of profiting off of it (as the web designer probably wants more of your money for you to use the domain). You can go the route of litigation to force the joker to give you back your domain under the U.S. Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) of 1999 (assuming you live in the US).
If the domain is registered in your name: If the domain is in your name and the web design is just being an idiot, what you can do is feign an interest in working with the web designer and have him send you the account information. You can also contact your domain registrar about the issue to regain access to the account.

OP is probably like some of my clients; he might have thought that it was easier to have the web designer set all of that up for him. Of course, I always register the domain using the client's information and not with my own as I'm not some shoddy business owner.

It is not possible to get back as the designer has all the hold of it. You need to get back from him very politely. Keep trying luring him.
