Questions about keywords

Hi!

I have just stared to look in to SEO, and I must say that at the moment everything is overwhelming. I want to start with something small (goal to make 1$/month) or something and the last few weeks I have been playing around with Google's keyword planner.

Here is the questions I would like to ask about keywords:

- Since I am totaly new to this and only want to make a small projekt at start. How many keyword/longtail-keywords should I choose try to rank for?
- Experienced people how many keywords/longtail-keywords are they trying to rank for with one site?
- How many mothly searches should a keyword have to be "good to choose"?

Other questions:

- What kind of site is the best one to start with when learning SEO? one-page? blog? if it is a blog does it need to be updated continuously or is it just to creat alot of related post when the blog is new and then let it be?

- Is there any good thread here on BHW on how to check competition on keywords? (Keyword planner only shows adwords competition?)
- Is there any FREE/Cheap tool for checking keyword competition?

-What kind of website are you trying to create (blog, business, affiliate, etcetera)? If you're starting with a blog, try to start off with at least 10 very low competition keywords (I have a guide that covers keyword research here) and work your way up from there (although you can start off with any number of keywords you want, I don't know what methods you'll be employing for this endeavour).

-I target as many keywords as I can on my website's blogs and around 20-40 for the pages.

-Since I write separate articles for each keyword, I try to target keywords that have at least 300 monthly searches. This might sound low, although I also target variations of that keyword (LSI keywords) in the same article, which I usually rank for in addition to the primary keyword. With that said, the number of monthly searches that the "good" keywords have will depend on what your site can compete for.

-If I were you, I would start off with a blog simply because you can practise different SEO techniques and learn what keyword targeting methods work for you on the same website.

-See my thread that I linked to above and here. I go over how to determine the competition level of the SERPs there.

-The Moz Toolbar is a decent tool, although it's far from perfect.

Are you looking to do Adsense or affiliate marketing? Alot of my sites are Amazon affiliate sites so I choose one main keyword and then lots of secondary keywords (many of them buyer keywords). When I say 'lots' it depends on the topic and how broad it is - it might be only 10 if its a very small niche or it could be 100+ if I intend to build the site into an authority site.

- How many mothly searches should a keyword have to be "good to choose"?

My main keyword normally has 5000+ searches but for secondary keywords I'd go as low as 100 searches. I have one site that ranks #3 for the keyword 'where to buy x product' and according to Google it only gets 70 monthly searches. The site only ranks for that one keyword but makes approximately $300-$400 per month on autopilot.

A low search keyword can be lucrative if it's a low competition long tail keyword or buyer keyword.

Probably a wordpress blog would be a good way to start. Definitely not one page. A blog should start off with about 10 articles and should be updated occasionally but not every day. Some of my sites I don't update at all, others I update on a weekly or monthly basis. It depends on your topic and how many keywords you've got to target.

- Is there any FREE/Cheap tool for checking keyword competition?
I use Long Tail Pro and although it's normally $97 (obviously not cheap) I think it's currently available for about $27 as they're launching the newest version. It's $17 monthly on top of that for platinum and you do need platinum to get the keyword competitiveness score. For me it was worth the investment as it saves me alot of time.

Before I got Long Tail Pro I used the free version of Traffic Travis - it shows you the top 10 results and tells you if your keywords are easy or hard to rank for. You should check it out as it's a good way to start.

Yes I am planning to go with AdSense, but I might combined it with Amazon, but I am not sure yet!
