Using Affiliates Links In Video Descriptions .. Has Anything Changed?

Hi all,

Just a quickie ..

It's been ages since I've put any affiliate clickbanks links on YT videos. Providing I use a URL shortener (in the video's description) is it still safe to do?

Also, is there anything else I need to know, or be aware of?

Well, I don't know if you were planning on using views or not, but as far as I know none of the exchange sites work anymore, and even buying views has become tricky.

Nah, I just wanted to make sure url shortening is still safe to do. I've got a legit channel (I know, shame on me) & I've found an affiliate product that's perfect for the niche .. I just don't want to risk damaging my channel rep.

Has anyone tried McAfee url shortener? I heard that's pretty good.

I wouldn't use bitly or tinyurl because it's easy to detect what's on the other side of the links. I have a custom url shortener written in Python that does the following:

1. GET - If the visitor is a bot it gets 302 redirected to an informational page.

2. HEAD - 405 Method Not Allowed response

That keeps Google's bots from knowing what's at the end of the links.

It's not something that you could just drop in, it's used for forwarding visitors to Amazon. But it wouldn't be difficult to create an App Engine app that just shortens links and prevents bots from learning where they go.

If you have a legit channel, I wouldn't risk it.
It's better to create a site, even if its a free blog, and link to the affiliate link from there.
