I know with google you can use all the keywords you want just not use the brand in your actual ad, is it the same with youtube? Can I put my competitors' brands as keywords/tags on my videos?

Simple question, simple answer: Yes you can..at least until someone report you..if you can make good ROI and dont mind getting banned after some time then go for it

I really doubt you'll get your video banned for using a brand in your tags. You should be good.
People make videos about apple products, and they have the "apple iphone" or "apple" in their tags and their videos aren't banned.

Depends whether it's commercial use or not... there's a good chance whatever you're doing would be covered by 'fair use'.

It is commercial, so it wouldn't be fairuse. Second, it's not something I would be using in title / description so it wouldn't be visible to people looking at the videos, just keywords/tags so my video will show up when they search for a competitor of the same product. What I don't know is, can keywords on a youtube video be seen, or are they purely hidden and just assist in SEO

Found the answer. You can search metatags on a youtube video -- we can close this thread now.
