This is directed to businesses offering both services and products... and to the marketing companies that consult with your local businesses... What have you found to be the most effective OFFLINE form of advertising for the business(TV, Radio, newspaper, Print, etc...)?

I'm currently studying Marketing so, I can answer your question.
The best media platform doesn't really exist. They're all good.
It just depends which one will work for you the most.
It depends on what you're promoting etc.

I create websites for small businesses,

For me, most effective offline marketing "platform" or method is
1. Text message marketing
2. Classified ads advertisements (craigslist, gumtree, etc)

I've tried print and adwords, too lazy to cold call.

How do you target small businesses with text message marketing?

How do you target small businesses with text message marketing?

I'm all ears too...where exactly do you get a list of cell phones used by business owners?

I'd pay handsomely for that...

Apologies for the delay. Simple: Classified ads websites, such as craigslist, gumtree, local business directory sites, official sites like registered electricians directory, local magazines. I've scrapped thousands of numbers from this, and that's just one city in a small country.

Note:

  • Target categories according to your desire. I find builders, massage, transport services are more responsive than fitness instructors and other niches. I'm not after the big bucks, just cleaning up at the lower end.
  • Don't message the same number twice.
  • Have a note saying "This is a once-off message, you are now auto-unsubscribed" to abide by the law for data protection, and don't spam people who have their number listed as a don't spam.

My current project, not that anyone asked but I gotta get it off my chest and it's somewhat related:
  • Scaling, which involves a nice python program which runs every hour during normal working hours, scrapes several such sites, and automatically texts all numbers (once they are fresh) a semi-personalised pitch based on their ad ("I saw your <category here> ad in <website here>, you might be interested in my service...").
  • Highest possible level of automation, from change requests to website drafting to CRM to budgeting for each advertising platform. I am currently writing an elaborate python program which will do about 80% of the work automatically, and allow me to still offer a personal service (most of the client interactions are actually personal) but this program does a lot of work, and creates and updates tasks in Asana accordingly so I can clearly see what's due for me.

Having said that I only have 9 clients right now (paying ongoing fee, ongoing work mostly automated).

I feel like I just take the plunge and write a journey thread. I can share a lot and am not too worried about the 1% of action takers.
