Does anyone operate a niche video sharing site? Decent money or nah?

do you guys think it's worth it to try and monetize one of these type of sites with the proper niche?

I have been in the video sharing niche in the past and have had a few successful ones. The main problem with video sharing sites is that they consume humongous amounts of bandwidth once it becomes popular. A few years back when I was in the game, bandwidth was a lot costlier and there was hardly any decent true unmetered hosts (at best those used to provide 10Mbps or so which were pathetic for video sharing sites once it becomes popular) at profitable prices. Nowadays, bandwidth is relatively cheaper and so, video sharing might be a sustainable niche. But then it would probably be harder to make a video sharing site extremely popular due to the combination of both competition (there were very few video sharing scripts and sites back then) as well as important of content in today's date. Adult video sharing might be easier to make popular due to obvious reasons but again the viewers nowadays want HD which would consume even more bandwidth resulting in even lesser net profit or even possible losses.

Exactly. I've had one about 4 years ago, it got really popular while it was on shared, generated 5 digit visitor numbers and then I had to get a cluster server. It didn't cost much, but was always afraid if it got even bigger, if the conversion rates were worth it. The niche I have for the site is still fairly not as competitive but can generate a lot of views easily.

These days, there's API's and importers so I was wondering by having those, if it helped. I know that adult sites always did good but like you said, it takes a lot of bandwidth. I wanted to put adsense on it again (was banned before, most likely my mistake), but I think this time I was going to go through DFP route. Originally I was trying OpenX and to make certain video categories more catered, needed behavorial / contextual targeting ads to make it appealing for other potential advertisers.

Adsense would probably make a video sharing site sustainable even if it consumes somewhat more bandwidth. But then you do not know when the site would be banned. Adsense can easily give the easy excuse of saying that there is not much content and hence, against adsense TOS.

Start it small and try to expand it gradually with time. Check profitability in the meanwhile. And do not depend solely on adsense as there is a ready made excuse for banning the site for non-exclusive or not much content. This only pertains to video sharing sites from primarily user generated content but if you produce your own unique quality videos and post them, it would be harder for adsense to ban the site. But I have seen adsense banning sites "without any proper reason" for many publishers over the years and so, you cannot take it for granted. Make sure the server bills are manageable even without adsense.

I was trying to carefully read the TOS and they said if you aggressively aggregate, they "could" ban you, but they also did mention, as long as you abide by their terms, using youtube videos embedded on a hosted sharing site is okay. I guess it's a decision on their end to see what deems fit.

I have seen adsense being disabled in perfectly legit unique sites with awesome design and interesting good media content. Unless you are creating the content yourself, adsense can be disabled anytime. I am saying that from experience. Even if you create videos with say slideshows from photos created by others, it is not enough. You NEED completely unique content be it media (video, images etc.) or written content to be fully safe.

You can always dip your foot into the adult video niche easy enough. Whether or not you can generate traffic is what will matter there, but you don't need to host any content if you don't want to. There are now plenty of online options for creating your own tube site with little to no cost. In fact for the cost of a domain, and some private registration you can build a tube site which uses no bandwidth, populates itself automatically, and your only job is to create traffic.

While these "domain parking" implementations don't generate the most revenue - they present a tremendous learning opportunity for anyone who is considering setting up a completely "white label" adult video site. These sites provide all the content, and receive the bulk of your revenue, so you can always branch out after you make some money and build your own actual tube site then. Or just build one. It's actually super easy!

Video sharing is competitive, although it is actually profitable ensure you setup unique strings of content and have a unique policy.
