I have to agree with this guy.

@nonai I read a thread the other day about this guy who was in the same situation as you and he basically transferred the domain to the past owner without a charge. As a result, good karma came his way . I know this is not the "profitable mindset" that I'm encouraging but nonetheless. But morally... I don't know, you might find some more value for your soul.

He didn't acquire it intentionally to hurt his business or anything, so i think he should get a fair price for it. There might be 1000 more people in the world with that name who may want that domain more then him, so it would be fair if he charge a reasonable price for it. Obviously dont ask a ridiculous amount but something like $100-300 should be fine.

From one hand, how friends wrote earlier, it would be nice from you just to transfer it back to him.

Bit from another hand, no one but himself caused the domain non renewal. He didn't do it, he should pay the price. The domain could be in hands of someone nastier than you, or someone could already build entire business on it. So, don't be too cheap.

OP Just ask him how much he is willing to pay.

If he offer you something ridiculous, he is trying to be a smart ass, so punish him for that by boosting the price high, and of course tell him this is the final price, in about 5 days You'll be launching your project on that pivotal domain. If he replies with some new shit you can lower the price a bit, but do not go soft on that kind of persona.

If he is nice guy hmm, I cant advice you on that it's up to you. But do not give it away for free.

May be if now he gives away that domain free, then Karma will say, OK, another bigger test for you this time, and out of many to follow.. let's test how generous you are! If you pass all these tests, you have a reserved front-row seat forever in Heaven! lol.

So better to be practical than to have a forever front-row reserved seat in Heaven for being the world's all-time most generous human being. Being normally practical will offer the same boon too -- for fulfilling the natural laws of Karma -- which are --- Hmm... I don't know! lol.
