Sorry to disappoint you but you wont succeed as a freelancer. I hired hundreds of freelancers and I can tell you one thing- I would never hire such an insecure person (just starting or not). I can now go on to explain what you need to make ATM out of Elance but you wont get it, so I wont waste my time

Rule number one needs to be that you can self sustain. You're asking a question that is asked every day. How you can make money as a freelancer is such a vague question. You could deliver pizzas for the sake of it. If you want to to learn how to use search engine optimization to make money money, then why not just read. No one is going to stop and tell you what to do when it's already available! The most successful people on here and in life are the ones who can process information themselves.
