Maybe these are dumb newbie questions but... suppose I were to use this to get, for example, 100 Twitter followers. I have to assume that these are either fake users or people who aren't really interested but are only following me in exchange for some incentive. So, what is the value of this? Does it improve my search engine rankings?

Hi

You'd order the signal to the corresponding platform - so Google reshares will only work on Google+ posts and so on.

Primary benefit is in providing social proof. But yes, social signals are also strongly correlated with rankings.
