No Content Ranking?

Hey there, I am pretty new to the SEO game but as I was researching my competition in the game hacks niche I found that there's plenty of online "generators" that are ranked on the top results without even having content on them? How is that possible I always read that good on-page optimization is a must and there should always be 300+ words with the text focused on the keyword so google doesn't see you as a spam. Could you guys pleae enlighten me of how this works and could you also tell me what do you prefer to rank the most single niche sites or multi niche blog sites?

Yeah but that still doesn't answer the question how can they rank a site with absolutely zero content on it, any clue?
I understand that their off-page SEO can be really strong but what about the On-page perhaps its not that important?

First thing where you read you need 300+ words content on site for ranking a site ? I have rank lots of sites without content. Always go with single niche sites in hack niche.

I think it has to do with domain age.. many of them are using subdomains of old domains they had for the same niche or using expired domains to rank those niches fast.

I have one site that ranks number four for a moderately competitive keyword. It is a one page site (about one year old), with virtually no content. I would venture to say that these occurrences are not the norm. In addition, my site has no links pointing to it. At one point in time it did have links pointing to it, but my ranking could be caused from link echoes.

Pretty much on any SEO tutorial I read the on-page guide says I need 300+ words with like ~3% keyword density. And why do you prefer single niche sites ?
