At the moment I am writing this review, we are starting our third project with CodeMongoose (Globussoft). We had worked with one PHP and two JAVA developers from Globussoft, also with many guys from marketing and support departments.
The first project was about bug fixing in a whitehat website made in PHP on ModX platform. The project went much slower than we expected and in some tasks a developer was clearly performing slower than our local based devs. Though to be honest, our local devs were a little more experienced and I had a chance to compare their performance in only a few tasks. At some point we were unsatisfied with how the developer tracked his working hours in JIRA. Only half of working hours was tracked. This issue was solved by Sumit by giving us as much working hours for free as left not logged in JIRA during that month. Thinking back, probably it was our mistake to start bug fixing of that project at all, because we could not evaluate the amount of necessary fixes before the actual work began. That's why I am being easy both on our and CodeMongoose developers in this particular project.
The second project was a whitehat investment broker website. For this project we hired a JAVA developer. He spent around one week configuring the environment for development. Sumit (aka Indianbill) kindly compensated that by giving us full 5 working days of development for free, though we were not asking for any compensation. After one more week this developer started working with a good speed, same what we would expect from our local workers. He's working on this project until now and so far we are happy with the results.
During these two projects we had learned a lot. Before starting the latest project we not only controlled CVs of developers but also introduced a testing task. This task required a developer to setup an environment necessary for development. One of developers undertaking the test had accomplished the task in just about 2,5 hours, which was a good result. We hired him recently and so far looks like he's getting a grasp of the project quickly.
All in all, I am happy with CodeMongoose service so far but you should understand that every product and service out there has it's own limitations.
Here's what you should and should not expect from CodeMongoose:
1. Expect excellent support, which is actually trying to understand your needs
2. Don't expect that saying something once is always enough. The problem of second language and distant communication is present and always will be while outsourcing tasks abroad. You either accept it and stay patient or hire people locally.
3. If your project is big enough, you've got to have own management. It's impossible to outsource everything, because you are the one who knows your idea and requirements best. For bigger projects I recommend hiring a senior programmer locally, who will make tasks for and control their execution by outsourced developers. For smaller projects you probably don't need that.
4. Expect a lot of day offs because there is a lot of public holidays in India. But they work on Saturdays, so the total amount of working hours per month is greater than in Europe or USA.
5. Expect timely quotes for any kind of dev projects, because their marketing team is really quick
Personally I would trust the following kinds of projects to CodeMongoose:
- Anything blackhat and/or related to social media manipulation
- Smaller whitehat projects like building software prototypes
- Bigger whitehat projects under supervision of locally hired developer
Design and UX/UI works I would leave to local designers if you are based in EU or US. First, your needs in design oftentimes can not be formalized easily, thus being harder to communicate to outsourced workers. Second, in India the general idea of what a good design looks like is pretty different from US and Europe. Though one of the latest Globussoft's project looked quite nice, sorry don't remember it's name.
Also, I would not suggest neglecting basic developer selection procedures like CV assessment, test tasks, interviewing etc. This is valid both for locally hired and outsourced developers, though CodeMongoose's devs are kind of already preselected.
The last but not least argument for outsourcing development to CodeMongoose is the price. Just to make a quick comparison, considering all taxes, equipment and bonuses, we would spend $27-38 per hour for 3-5y experienced locally hired developer in Eastern Europe. With CodeMongoose you get a developer having 3-4y of experience for approx $11,5/hour and 5+ year of experience for approx $20 /hour with zero headache about additional accounting, employment laws, software licenses etc
To conclude this review, I would always prefer professionally organized CodeMongoose team to any freelancer but in some specific projects or their parts you should still have someone locally to take care of things.
P.S. If you are interested in seeing the aforementioned projects (developed by CodeMongoose) or have additional questions, you may contact me in skype.
